Meeting Minutes 10-14

October 15th, 2009 by Laura Streyle

*Great group of SLUGs at the meeting!

I. Kiddos from Johnston Montessori: Thursday 9-10:30am in the garden. Taking out beds. 40 kiddos. Helpers from SLUG to give Christina a hand with the visit.

II. Compost – we need to start putting chopped up leaves on the compost. It’s getting stinky. So, take a pitchfork and dig into some leaves that grounds will be dropping off this weekend, and put a layer on the compost before and after you put the new food onto the pile.

III. Ideas for LERC Grant:

-greenhouse: location, inground so that we do not need a building permit and we won’t be letting warm air out when we enter and exit house

-vermiculture: getting brew mash from local breweries to help with this. Getting the bins and screens to get castings.

-rain barrels

-signage: sign that illustrates layout of the garden and has SLUG’s name on it so that people can know what’s going on in the garden all year long.

IV. Interest in a field trip to Growing Power in Milwaukee or with Robert Pierce in Madison.

V. Garlic planting at Kuehne farm: Tuesday, Oct. 20th at 2:30pm. People signed up: Ariel, Natasha, Will, Steve, Adam, Oren, Stacey(?)

VI. Gardening Extravaganza this weekend:

Sunday 9-11 w/ Sophie//Brunch//12-2 w/ Laura

On the agenda:

-pull big weeds out of beds

-make sure hoses are put inside

-take trays and pots inside to washroom

-cover beds with compost and leaves

Meeting Minutes 10-7

October 10th, 2009 by Laura Streyle

Great showing of SLUGs…all seats filled. Yippee!

I. Kiddos:

Sophie L – October 23rd, children from the Academy, tentative time of 1:45pm. SLUG volunteers: Emily, Will, Neel, Adam, Adam and Julia

Christina – October 15th, children from Johnston/Montessori Elementary school, 9-10:30am. SLUG volunteers: Neel, Sophie P, Natasha, Will, Elisa, Julia

With both of these groups of kiddos, the focus will be on “putting the garden to sleep;” Christina would also like to focus on composting with the Montessori kiddos.

II. Composting has been going well, but this is not to say that the SLUG group is not very busy, and it is difficult to consistently provide the SLUGpower that is neccessary to compost. It is important to trade phone numbers and to have a set plan of action (i.e. where to meet, who gets the truck, who gets the food, who takes the bins back, who takes the truck back…etc.), especially before it starts getting colder outside. Because of this colder weather, the shed water has been turned off for the season. Thus, cleaning the bins will not be possible to do down at the garden.

III. Volunteering: did not set goal of when to be done with taking stuff down, but there is a common agreement that we need to all push through to get all the beds taken down. Volunteering shifts will continue until all have agreed to stop, and when the garden is winterized.

IV. Garlic: Tuesday of reading period week, Oct. 20th, we will plan on Steve to call Oren saying that it is okay to drive out to his farm to plant garlic. This will be a time committment – up to 5 hours. Adam, Sophie P, Annie’s “connections,” and Sophie’s mama van were mentioned as modes of transportation.

V. Money: not including money from Downer, our total income at this point is $3,800.78. Our total poundage is 1213.43.

VI. Announced LERC Grant, Annie’s scholarship, Greenfire’s “The Age of Stupid,” and Sophie P’s Powershift summit. Sophie P also introduced the idea of showing a documentary about the Greenhorns Project. Perhaps this is something that would be better for Greenfire to take on, but we will stay open to showing it.
