Our fourth annual tutti! scholarship event is now history and what a splendid evening it was in the new Warch Campus Center at Lawrence University. Over $25,400 was raised at the event Saturday, October 24, 2009, to assist many of our struggling families afford music instruction for their children.
The Matt Buchman and Mark Urness combo kicked off the evening with cool, soothing jazz followed by a fabulous Big Band musical review played by the LU Jazz Band. The Academy Faculty String Quartet then serenaded us as we sipped wine and partook of delicious hors d’oeuvres provided by Bon Appetit. Emcee Scott Rezin enthusiastically engaged the crowd, keeping focus on the various activities and opportunities available for everyone’s participation. As Dean Brian Pertl said, “It was a beautifully run and organized event. Everyone did such a spectacular job. The whole world should have been there.”
Winners of the great raffle prizes were Mike Ray, Mike Evarts, John Mayville, Ken Donnermeyer and Alyson Chapman. Event prize drawings went to Keith Powell, Julie Martin, Patty Darling and Trudy Whitenack.
Special thanks to the Steering Committee who devoted considerable time, talent and energy to this worthwhile cause: providing scholarships for families who would not otherwise be able to afford music instruction for their children. When asked why Lawrence Academy of Music students like to make music, Rebecca, age 13, replied, “I like to make music because it makes me feel like I am bringing something good into the world.” Christian, age 16, said, “It enriches my life and it helps me make others’ lives better. Music is very special. Making music lights up everyone’s day.” That makes it all so worthwhile.
The Steering Committee is already hard at work planning next year’s tutti! where we will again utilize the impressive campus center. The date is Friday, February 4, 2011 so please mark your calendars NOW so you don’t miss out on what promises to be another incredible evening; great live entertainment, fabulous prizes, tasty food, delicious wine and much more.
Onward we go “sustaining beautiful music for all!”
