Networking with Alumni

The Lawrence alumni network is one of the university’s greatest assets. Unfortunately, it also seems to be one of the best-kept secrets. I say “unfortunately” because it shouldn’t be a secret! We have alumni in almost any field and location you can think of. This provides an amazing resource for current students who would like to learn more about a specific industry or hear how past LU students have used their liberal arts degree.

Okay, you might be thinking, I agree having an active alumni network is great, but how do I get in touch with alumni that are doing something I’m interested in?

There are two primary ways of getting in touch with alumni: reaching out via email, or meeting face-to-face at an alumni networking reception or similar event hosted by Lawrence.

4 Tips for Marketing Your Liberal Arts Degree

It’s no secret that liberal arts colleges prepare students differently for their careers than other kinds of schools. Maybe that’s the very reason you chose to attend Lawrence in the first place. But does getting your degree from a liberal arts school put you at a disadvantage in the job market?

According to a report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) in November 2010, “liberal arts graduates receive fewer offers, less compelling offers, and at dramatically lower compensation levels.”

So, does this mean that you should drop your double major and head to an engineering school if you hope to get a good job someday? Definitely not. Instead, it’s important to learn how to effectively market yourself and the great things about your liberal arts education that will help you stand out from the rest of an applicant pool.

Become LinkedIn FURTHER: Making Better Use of LinkedIn’s Resources

A booming professional social network, LinkedIn allows its users to search for jobs, find employees, join professional groups, conduct market research, to name a few. For college job hunters, LinkedIn is not a mere job-searching engine, nor business persons’ Facebook. There is much more to do than just uploading your resume and “following” (as you do on Twitter).
