Composition Courses
Music composition courses at Lawrence are designed for students who plan to pursue the B.Mus. in Music Theory and Composition as well as students in performance, music education and jazz studies who wish to enrich their studies with experience in composition.
Courses for freshmen and sophomores
MUCA 100: Fundamentals of Composition (6 units)
An introduction to basic compositional techniques, taught as a small group course (5 students). This class is a prerequisite to MUCA 250: Introductory Composition (private composition lessons). Offered Spring 2013.
MUCA 110: Introduction to Electronic Music (6 units)
An introduction to digital audio sampling and editing, digital signal processing, sound synthesis, MIDI sequencing, and multi-track sound mixing. Offered Fall 2012.
MUCA 400: Electroacoustic Composition & Performance (6 units)
A collaborative seminar course providing an introduction to live electroacoustic performance and composition. Offered Fall 2012.
MUEN 235: Improvisation Group (IGLU) (1 unit)
Solo and group improvisation without stylistic boundaries. Offered every term.
MUCA 250: Introductory Composition (3 units)
Students are eligible for placement in private composition lessons (MUCA 250) upon successful completion of MUCA 100: Fundamentals of Composition.
