On January 21st, the Lawrence University community will take a day off of classes (yes, that’s right, there are no classes that day) to come together in a Day of Service honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. We’ve seen a phenomenal response in past years and there’s no reason to believe that this year won’t be even better! To facilitate the Lawrence University community’s involvement in the greater Appleton community, the VCSC has put together an action-packed program of activities for Lawrence students, staff, and faculty. Read & Reflect: A Lunch Discussion: 11 am-12:30 pm; Hurvis Room (WCC)

Student-Led Volunteer Opportunities: 2:30 – 2:30 pm; Warch Campus Center
Can’t make it to the main volunteering event? Want to learn more about ways to get involved in the Appleton community or volunteer from right on campus? Come to one or two Student-Led Volunteer Opportunities (led by LU organizations) such as Habitat for Humanity or WhoKnits. Each opportunity will be offered twice: once from 12:30 to 1:30 pm and again from 1:30 to 2:30 pm.

Community Volunteering: 2:30 – 6 pm; Esch/Hurvis (WCC)
It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for, when Lawrentians go out en masse to save the world! Ok, maybe not quite, but you get the idea. Last year on MLK Jr. Day, LU volunteers led activities on fairness and diversity at Boys & Girls Club sites all around Appleton. It went so well that we decided to do it again! Join us in the at 2:30 pm for a send-off to Boys & Girls Club sites around Appleton, where you will teach K-12 students about tolerance and diversity (no teaching or other experience necessary!). Volunteers will be back by 6 pm.

Interested in learning more about the Boys & Girls Club curriculum before teaching it? When you sign up for MLK Jr. Day service opportunities, you will also have a chance to sign up for an extra (pre-MLK Jr. Day) training on the curriculum (if you choose this option, we’ll send you more information on when and where via email).

How to Build a Just World: 6:30 pm; Memorial Chapel
You are also cordially invited to attend the community celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Reverend Wanda Washington from Milwaukee will speak on “How to Build a Just World.” Registration is not required for this event.

This event is co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Lifeline, SHARB, GLOW, TWLOHA-LU chapter, and the gender studies department, and is funded by a grant from the local Community Health Action Team.

All students who are currently enrolled as juniors at Lawrence University are eligible to apply for this award. The award will be given to a student whose project has the potential to impact society by addressing the demonstrated needs of individuals, families, or the community at Lawrence, in the Fox Cities or beyond, through volunteerism, entrepreneurship, or artistic or scholarly activities. Students will receive up to $5,000 of support from this fund through a competitive application and selection process.  Funds can be used to cover costs associated with Senior Experience projects, tuition, books or costs related to professional development.

The annual selection process will be managed by the Office of the Provost in collaboration with the Office of Alumni and Constituency Engagement. All juniors are eligible to apply, and staff and faculty members will also be asked to nominate students. To apply, students will submit application materials and a comprehensive project proposal before the end of Winter Term that show how a new or ongoing project they are working on has the potential to impact society by addressing the demonstrated needs of individuals, families or a specific community through volunteerism, entrepreneurship, or artistic or scholarly activities.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee comprised of the following people (or their designees): the provost, the dean of career services, the Pieper Chair in Servant Leadership, and the director of volunteer and community service programs. Depending on the number of applications, the committee may interview finalists. The committee will select the award winner(s), who will be announced before the end of Spring Term as part of Honors Day. Students selected to receive the Mita Sen Award For Societal Impact must report back to the university on how the funds were used.
