Wilderness First Aid Course

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

From the Outdoor Recreation Club:

The Outdoor Recreation club is offering, for the second time, a

Wilderness First Aid (WFA) class. We are hiring a trained instructor

from Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities (SOLO) to teach this

class. It is a fantastic class for anyone that goes outside. Even if

you just want to learn a little about first aid, this is also a

superior class and much more informative than the traditional First

Aid class. This class focuses a lot on immediate patient care and

reacting to an emergency situation. The class is designed to treat

minor injuries, and dress serious injuries until they can evacuated to

a hospital. It is a two year certification. It can also be used for

a WFR recert for WMA, NOLS or SOLO. I took the class last year and

used the information I learned few times last summer in the National

Park I worked out.

The class is Jan 17-18, about 8 hours each day. Saturday night there

is an optional Adult CPR class.

Cost for LU faculty and Staff $100 for WFA and an additional $35 for

CPR. You can take both or one class. I ask that you let me know by

the 17th of December, but if you have a change of heart, let me know

and I can probably fit you in.

For more specific information about the class, please visit http://www.soloschools.com/wfa.html

or send me an email milesd@lawrence.edu

I hope you all have a wonderful 10th and finals week.

CTL Reports Will Be Paperless Starting Winter 09

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Fellow Faculty: If you’re like me, you’ve probably been wondering why you’ve been getting tutoring reports from the CTL in hard copy. After all, these used to come as email attachments, and the hard copy itself seems to be a printout of an electronic form! What’s up with that?

I called Julie Haurykiewicz, Director of the CTL, and she told me that they’ve been in the process of developing an online process whereby reports can be entered via Voyager and sent to instructors via email. It’s taken a little longer to finish this project than originally planned, but starting in Winter term, CTL reports will once again be paperless!
