Inside LU Athletics: Vikings aim to be contender in MWC softball race

Filling out the lineup card will not be a matter of routine for Lawrence University softball coach Kim Tatro this spring.

With a deeper and more versatile team than she has had in several seasons, Tatro will have more options when she puts pen to paper in the dugout. The hope is that translates into more victories and a return to the Midwest Conference Tournament, a four-team gathering in which Lawrence was a regular participant for most of the last 15 years.

“I think that’s our focus every year,” Tatro said of playing in the MWC Tournament. “We’ve fallen short the last couple of years. Conference play and being one of the top two teams in the North Division is the goal.”

Lawrence finished 16-16 in 2010 and that included a 6-7 mark in conference play. While the Vikings lost four-time all-conference selection Alex Goodson to graduation, the Vikings return the other seven position starters, including three all-conference selections, from last season and their top two pitchers.

The Vikings also have five freshman, and the lone senior is 2009 MWC North Division Player of the Year is shortstop Carli Gurholt.

“We have youth but better depth than we’ve had the past couple of years,” said Tatro, a five-time MWC Coach of the Year. “We’re the type of team that has to stay healthy to be successful. I feel great about the flexibility of our depth. We’ve purposefully recruited the types of kids who can play multiple positions.”

That type of versatility starts with the pitching staff, which will likely be in the lineup whether they are on the mound or not.

Junior Emily Perish and sophomore Shannon Murray split time on the mound last season. Murray, a 2010 all-conference and all-region selection, went 10-6 with a 3.69 earned run average and threw only the second no-hitter in school history. She also played in the infield and outfield and hit .347 with 16 runs batted in. Perish was 6-10 with a 3.55 ERA and played on the infield. She hit .295 and was second on the team with 19 RBI.

“As a junior, Emily has a great understanding of what to expect from the college game,” Tatro said. “Shannon’s only a sophomore, but as a freshman she was out there a ton. With the addition of Cory Paquette, it really gives us a solid three-pitcher rotation and some options.”

Paquette, a former standout at Manitowoc Roncalli, will likely see time at second base with Perish. Murray is likely to play first when she’s not pitching.

Gurholt, who missed the final three weeks of the 2010 season with an injury, returns to play shortstop. She hit .340 with four homers and 18 RBI in only 19 games last season. Tatro said Gurholt has looked good in her return from injury.

Sophomore Courtney Steile and freshman Alissa Geipel will battle for the starting job at third base, and sophomore Gaelen Lombard-Knapp is back behind the plate.

The Vikings return all-conference outfielders Cathy Kaye in left and Katie Simonsen in center, although the latter has yet to join the team after studying in London during the winter term.

Kaye hit .398 with six homers and 17 RBI last season, and Simonsen hit .358 and drove in 13 runs in 2010. Tatro said any number of players could see action in right field.

“I think we’re more balanced and we don’t have to rely on the middle of our lineup to get things done,” Tatro said. “On any given day, one through nine can get it done at a clutch moment. I think that takes the pressure off everyone, but to get it done everyone has to step up.”

Tatro said she plans to use the team’s 10-game spring break trip (March 15-20) to Clermont, Fla., to evaluate how the squad will fit together.

“Everyone on our roster is going play in Florida,” Tatro said. “They are all going to be given opportunities to compete for spots.”

Tepper goes national

Lawrence track and field standout Rose Tepper qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships this weekend at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, in the high jump.

Tepper became a provisional qualifier when she jumped 5 feet, 5.75 inches, on Feb. 5 and broke the school record in the process. She didn’t have much of a chance to improve on that when she injured her knee and was forced to miss the MWC Championships.

It appeared as though Tepper was going to miss the meet when two jumpers went higher than she did at last-chance meets on March 5. Tepper entered last weekend tied for the 10th-best jump in the nation, and the Lawrence coaches anticipated the NCAA would take only 11 jumper. Tepper got her ticket punched to the national championships when the NCAA took 20 jumpers instead of the anticipated 11.

This is the first trip to the NCAA meet for Tepper, a sophomore from Mount Vernon, Iowa, and the 2010 MWC outdoor champ in the high jump.

Sheridan all-tournament

Senior defenseman Jon Sheridan was chosen for the all-tournament team at the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association’s Harris Cup this past weekend.

The Midland, Mich., native and team captain assisted on both goals in Lawrence’s loss to Adrian College in the semifinals. Sheridan finished the season with four goals and 10 assists for 14 points.

DMR record falls

The men’s distance medley relay team broke the school record at the UW-Stevens Point Pointer Qualifier this past Saturday.

The team of Dan Thoresen, Cam Blegen, Mike Mangian and Sam Stevens raced to a time of 10:33.27. That broke the mark of 10:39.83, which was set in 2010 by Stevens, Mark Sprtel, Matt Frelich and Sam Estrem.

Sheridan makes Harris Cup all-tournament team

ADRIAN, Mich. – Lawrence University standout Jon Sheridan has been named to the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association’s Harris Cup all-tournament team.

Sheridan (Midland, Mich.), a senior defenseman, was chosen for the team after the Vikings lost to Adrian in the Harris Cup semifinals. Sheridan assisted on both Lawrence goals in the semifinal game against the Bulldogs.

Sheridan finished the season with four goals and 10 assists for 14 points.

Lawrence finished with a 14-13-1 record and saw its season end in the Harris Cup semifinals for the third consecutive season. The Vikings posted only the fourth winning season in school history and the second under head coach Mike Szkodzinski.

Tepper to jump at NCAA Championships

Lawrence University track and field standout Rose Tepper will take part in the NCAA Division III Championships this weekend.

Tepper (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) competes Friday at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.

Tepper became a provisional qualifier when she jumped 5 feet, 5.75 inches, on Feb. 5 and broke the school record in the process. She didn’t have much of a chance to improve on that jump when she injured her knee and was forced to miss the Midwest Conference Championships.

It appeared as though Tepper was going to be on the outside looking in at the NCAA Championships after the last-chance meets on March 5. Two jumpers went higher than 5-5.75 on March 5, but Tepper got her ticket punched to the national championships when the NCAA took 20 jumpers instead of the anticipated 11.

This is the first trip to the NCAA meet for Tepper, a sophomore and the 2010 MWC outdoor champ in the high jump.

Tepper is the first Lawrence track athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships since Madeline Steininger went to the outdoor championships in the high jump in 2009. Steininger also qualified for the indoor championships in 2008 and placed fifth in the high jump to earn All-America honors.

Lawrence falls to Adrian in Harris Cup semifinals

ADRIAN, Mich. — Adrian College built an early lead and went on to a 9-2 victory over Lawrence University on Saturday in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association’s Harris Cup semifinals at Arrington Ice Arena.

Fifth-ranked Adrian (22-3-1) scored three times in the first 4:33 and then sealed the win by scoring the game’s final five goals. Adrian plays Marian University, which defeated No. 9 MSOE 9-2 on Saturday, for the Harris Cup championship on Sunday.

Lawrence (14-13-1) saw its season end in the Harris Cup semifinals for the third consecutive season. The Vikings posted only the fourth winning season in school history and the second under head coach Mike Szkodzinski.

Eric Miller scored the first of his three goals for the Bulldogs just 22 seconds into the game. Miller added another goal at the 3:02 mark, and Eric Roman scored at 4:33 to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.

Adrian made it 4-0 on Jordan Watts’ goal just 1:36 into the second period before the Vikings sliced into the lead.

Sam Johnson scored on the power play for the Vikings at the 8:38 mark of the second, and Huck Saunders scored just 14 seconds later, and the Vikings had cut the lead in half at 4-2.

Miller doused Lawrence’s hopes of a comeback as he completed his hat trick with a goal at the 10:12 mark of the second. Jeremy Klaver then made it 6-2 with a power play goal at 11:40 of the second.

The Bulldogs then added three goals in the final period.

Three Vikings named to all-conference squad

Three Lawrence University basketball players have been chosen for the All-Midwest Conference team in a vote by league coaches.

Senior center Erik Borrensen (West Bend, Wis./Living Word Lutheran) was chosen for the second team, and senior guard Jon Mays (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and junior guard Tyler Crisman (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) both received honorable mention.

Lawrence’s three all-conference picks tied Illinois College for the most selections to the squad.

Borresen, who was chosen for the all-conference team for the first time, was the only player in the conference to average a double-double. In 18 league games, Borresen was sixth in the conference in scoring at 15.6 points per game and was first in rebounding at 11.7 per game.

Borresen, who shot 50.7 percent from the floor during conference play, also was third in the league at 1.5 blocks per game.

On the season, Borresen averaged 15.5 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. He had a league-best 13 double-doubles on the season.

Mays, who also was honored for the first time, finished third in the league in scoring at 18.2 points per game. He also was 10th in the conference in rebounding at 5.3 per game. Mays also finished fifth in the league in free throw percentage at 80 percent.

On the season, Mays led the Vikings in scoring at 16.4 points per game and also pulled down 5.1 rebounds per contest. Mays, who led the team in free throw shooting at 80.3 percent, hit 41 3-pointers on the season.

Mays also had a team season high for points when he scored 38 in Lawrence’s 85-65 win over Carroll University on Jan. 29.

Crisman also was chosen for the all-conference team for the first time. He finished seventh in the conference in scoring at 15.2 points per game.

One of the top 3-point shooters in the conference, Crisman was second in the league at 2.8 3-pointers made per game. He finished third in 3-point shooting at 45.5 percent in league play. Crisman also averaged 2.7 assists per game, which ranked 11th in the conference.

On the season, Crisman was third on the team in scoring at 15.4 points per game. He also averaged 2.6 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game.

Crisman, who shot 48 percent from the floor, led the team in 3-point shooting at 45 percent, which ranks him 13th in the nation. Crisman hit a team-high 68 3-pointers this season, which ranks second in Lawrence season history to the 75 John Dekker made in 2009-10.

Lawrence finished the season with an 11-12 record and was fifth in the Midwest Conference with a 10-8 mark.

Inside LU Athletics: Lawrence skaters tackle Adrian in Harris Cup semifinals

The Lawrence University hockey team has been knocking on the door. Actually, it’s more like pounding on the door.

They will find out Saturday afternoon if they can finally break that door down at the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cup semifinals at Adrian College.

Lawrence faces three-time defending league champion Adrian in the semifinals. The Vikings and Bulldogs have played three very tight games over the last year, including the 2010 Harris Cup semifinals, but Adrian has come out on top each time.

“From every game we take positives and negatives,” Lawrence coach Mike Szkodzinski said. “The positive is that we did compete with Adrian the last three times we played them. The negative is that we didn’t beat them. We know it’s going to take a tremendous effort to make that happen on Saturday.”

Adrian (21-3-1), ranked fifth in this week’s United States College Hockey Online poll, held Lawrence (14-12-1) off for a 3-2 victory in last season’s semifinals. Marian University (18-7-0) takes on ninth-ranked MSOE (21-5-1) in the other semifinal.

“At this point in the year you get a feel for the team, how everyone is feeling, how they are playing, and if they have the right mindset,” said senior captain and defenseman Jon Sheridan. “Honestly, I feel that we are all on board and believe that we are going to win on Saturday. Adrian is a good team, they have proven that for the past couple of years, but we are a good team as well.”

Adrian, which sports the nation’s current longest unbeaten streak at 14 games (13-0-1), is the top scoring team in the nation at 4.88 goals per game. Leading that prolific offense is senior forward Shawn Skelly, who has 36 points this season and 217 for his career.

Szkodzinski knows his team must improve from last weekend’s quarterfinal playoff series sweep of Northland College if it wants the opportunity to upset Adrian.

“We have to do a better job protecting the puck,” Szkodzinski said. “We turned the puck over way too many times (last weekend), it cost us a number of odd-man opportunities.”

Lawrence also has to stay out of the penalty box. The Vikings are third in the nation in penalty minutes, and Adrian is fourth. The Bulldogs ranks third in the nation on the power play and are converting at a 29.9 percent clip.

The last line of defense for the Vikings will again be senior goaltender Evan Johnson, who is coming off a solid showing against Northland. He stopped 52 of 54 shots last weekend and improved his numbers on the season to a .910 save percentage and 2.90 goals against average.

Szkodzinski said he has been buoyed by the play of his seven seniors and noted last weekend’s efforts of Johnson and forward Josh DeSmit, who had both game-winning goals against Northland.

“We’re pleased with the play of our upperclassmen,” Szkodzinski said. “It tells us our upper class has a strong desire to make something happen this year.”

The semifinal winners meet on Sunday in the Harris Cup championship game, and the winner gets an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. While that goal of playing in the NCAA Tournament is within reach, the Vikings are pushing it to the back of their minds.

“I think everyone at some point dreams the dream about winning this weekend and then moving onto the national tournament,” Sheridan said. “That’s a big part of why we all play hockey, but to be successful you have to focus on the moment and the task at hand. It’s not always easy to do that, and there is a time and place to have those dreams. When it becomes crunch time, you just focus on the moment.”

The only moment Szkodzinski is planning for is when they drop the puck against Adrian.

“Our sole focus right now is on the Adrian Bulldogs,” Szkodzinski said. “From a personal standpoint, it would be a special event (to coach a team in the NCAA Tournament). From a human standpoint, it would be natural to think what might be. We have a special group of kids here, but I wouldn’t be doing the team any justice to let my mind wander.”

Record falls again

Junior Nick Kerkman broke his own record in the weight throw at the Midwest Conference Championships last weekend. Kerkman took fifth place in the event with a throw of 48 feet, 11.5 inches. That broke his own mark of 48-8, which he set on Feb. 19.

The ‘shoe’ must go on

Freshman Curran Carlile finished fourth in the 5,000 meters at the MWC Championships last weekend. You’re thinking, OK, that’s pretty good.

Carlile’s race gets a whole lot better when you learn he ran most of the event with only one shoe.

Carlile was running neck-and-neck with another competitor for first place when they both swung into the second and third lanes to lap a slower runner. When Carlile cut back in from lane three to take the lead, the other runner stepped on his heel, and he lost his shoe.

Despite running several thousand meters with only one shoe, he finished less than 16 seconds behind the winner.
