Marcia Bjornerud Awarded Fulbright Research Grant
Marcia Bjornerud, professor of geology and the Walter Schober Professor in Environmental Studies, has been named a recipient of a 2009 Fulbright Senior Scholar Award to conduct field research in New Zealand.  Beginning in March, Bjornerud will embark on a four-month-long study of exposed rocks along the Alpine Fault on the country’s South Island, one of the world's most active plate boundaries. Sunday Recital Features LAM Chamber Ensembles
The Lawrence Academy of Music Chamber Ensembles, under the direction of Carol Leybourn, perform Sunday, January 11 at 2 p.m. in Harper Hall. The middle and high school musicians will play a set of variations by Anton Reicha based on themes from Mozart's “The Marriage of Figaro,” as well as pieces by Bach, Borodin, Brahms, and Schubert. The finale, Prelude from Grieg's "Holberg Suite,” will feature all five ensembles playing together.  The recital is free and open to the public.

Forecast Calling for “Snow” in Stansbury Theatre
Milwaukee-based Wild Space Dance Company pays tribute to the power and impact of winter Friday, January 16 at 8 p.m. in Stansbury Theatre with its presentation of "Snow." A mix of physical beauty, wit, power, and of course the white stuff, the performance features Wild Space's latest work "Eight Feet Deep" among five other dances.  Tickets are available through the Lawrence Box Office, 920-832-6749.  Read more.

Neustadter Scores Silent Film for Turner Classic Movies
Garth Neustadter ’09 recently finished a silent movie film score he was commissioned to write on behalf of Turner Classic Movies.  Neustader composed, recorded, and edited more than two hours of original music for the 1923 film “The White Sister.”  The movie is being digitally restored by Warner Brothers for a scheduled broadcast early in 2009. Public Notice of Evaluation for Re-accreditation
Lawrence University will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit for re-accreditation February 23-25, 2009.  A team representing The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools will conduct the visit. Swift, Sacred Spaces Focus of New Faculty Books


A pair of books by faculty members Bertrand Goldgar and Martyn Smith have recently hit the bookshelves. Goldgar, professor of English, co-edited "English Political Writings 1711-1714," the first in a new 15-volume edition of the complete works of Jonathan Swift published by Cambridge University Press. Goldgar is one of only three American editors working on the Swift project. Smith, assistant professor of religious studies, is the author of "Religion, Culture, and Sacred Space" from Palgrave Macmillan. The book examines the cultural considerations that influence the way a place becomes fixed in a society's consciousness.
