Just wanted to write this week to give a few updates on the end of the swim season and a preview of the events to come the rest of this term.
Over Valentine’s Day weekend, the team braved the six hour bus ride to Grinell, Iowa for the Conference Championships for swimming and diving. It’s a 3-day meet, with preliminary heats each morning. The top 16 finishers from each event get to move on to finals in the afternoon to swim for points. I swam the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free. I would have loved to have done better and dropped more time in my last meet as a competitive swimmer and college athlete, but overall, I’m happy with the accomplishments and progress I’ve made in my times over the last 3 years. It will definitely be a huge change to not have swimming as a part of my life anymore. But, thinking more positively, the team did well as a whole! The girls took 4th and the men 6th. Considering we have one of the smaller teams at conference, they’re pretty good standings, and some of my teammates had excellent swims, winning events and breaking some school records!!
Since swimming has ended, I’ve been enjoying the extra free time and have been using it to do my homework, and even better, to hang out with friends I barely saw while in season. Recently, I went with a few of them to see the musical WICKED! As a huge fan of the music, I was beyond excited to see the show itself and I loved every minute of it. The other exciting area of my life right now are more upcoming events in Theta, especially THETA week leading up to our Big/Little Reveal. Bigs and Littles are a tradition in Greek Life, with bigs serving as “big” sisters and mentors to the newer members, specifically thier “little” sister. This year, I’ll be getting my second little and I’m incredibly excited to welcome another member to the Penguin family and to have my family line continue. Considering how close I felt to my big, it’s a tradition that is really important to me in Theta and I really hope my little likes all the presents I’ll be giving her!
Other than that, I’ll be spending the next few weeks completing a literature review for my Sex and Sexism class, a research project for Cognitive Psycholoy and a comparative paper for Modern Art. And once that’s all done and my finals have been taken, there’s Spring Break! But as for where I’m going for that, it’s still a work in progress…
