HOUSING DEPOSITS

Lawrence University has made the decision to waive the $200 housing deposit for continuing students for the 20-21 academic year. If you already paid the housing deposit, your student account will be credited the $200 deposit amount and it will either increase your credit balance amount or decrease the amount that is due for spring term.

BILLING STATEMENTS

Due to the change to distance learning for Spring Term, adjustments have been made to student’s accounts for Spring Term charges.  A new billing statement was generated on 4/15/2020 and is available to view in CASHNet.

  • If you are living off campus for Spring Term: your room, board, and fees were reversed from your student account and, if applicable, your Lawrence University Grant for Spring Term was adjusted proportionately to the charges removed from your account.
  • If you were approved to stay on campus for Spring Term, the original Spring Term room, board and fee charges were reversed from your student account. Updated charges for Spring Term were added as follows:  double room rate of $1,816, board plan charge of $1,535 (or $1,635 if you had the spring break board plan), and a student activity fee of $35.

The “Current Amount Due” listed in the upper right hand corner of your 4/15/2020 billing statement is the total account balance remaining for the 19-20 academic year.  If you did not pay Spring Term charges yet, please pay this balance by May 1, 2020.   Please disregard the amount listed as “Past Due Balance” at the bottom of the statement, this is due to the payment due date being extended.  Due to the extension, no late fees will apply in May.

MONTHLY PAYMENT PLAN PARTICIPANTS

The “Current Amount Due” on your billing statement is the balance remaining for the 19-20 academic year. If payment hasn’t been made for April yet, please pay at least half of the current amount due as soon as possible. The other half of the current amount due should be paid by May 15. If you are enrolled in the monthly payment plan and have a credit balance, you will be receiving an email from the Student Accounts Office to see how you would like the credit balance handled.

REFUNDS

If you have requested a refund of your credit balance, the Student Accounts Office will be processing all refunds by April 30.  Students that have signed up for electronic refunds (eRefund) will receive their refunds quicker.  If you haven’t signed up for eRefund yet, directions can be found here.

Questions regarding the balance due or billing statements can be sent to student_accounts@lawrence.edu.

If I will be participating in Term III distance learning from an off-campus location…

Is my bill still due March 15?

If you still owed a balance from Winter Term, please pay that. If you have not paid your Spring Term bill yet, it is ok to wait. We will be adjusting student accounts (described below) and hope to provide updated student account statements in mid-April.

How does this affect my bill?

If you are off-campus for Term III, room, board, and student activity fees will be removed from your bill.

How does this impact my financial aid?

If you receive a need-based Lawrence University Grant, your grant will be adjusted proportionately. Merit scholarships, federal grants (Pell), and state grants will not be affected for students enrolled full-time.

In most cases, students with federal student loans will see no change as long as they are enrolled full-time. In certain situations, a Federal Parent PLUS Loan or private education loan may need to be reduced.

Will I receive a refund?

If you’ve already paid your Term III balance, refunds will be issued after charges and, if applicable, financial aid have been adjusted. If you haven’t already enrolled in E-Refund, please do so right away! This is the fastest way for us to get refunds to you. Instructions on how to enroll in eRefund are available here: https://www.lawrence.edu/info/offices/financial-aid/cost/cashnet/node/5349.

When will I know what my balance due or refund will be?

We are hoping to have all student accounts adjusted by mid-April. At that time, your updated student account statement will be available to you.

When will my adjusted payment for Term III be due?

If you haven’t paid your Term III balance, it is ok to wait. Payment will be due approximately two weeks after your updated student account statement is available.

If you are on a monthly payment plan, Lawrence will adjust the payment amounts and dates for the April and May payments.

What if I can’t afford the flight / travel expenses to get home on short notice?

Spring break has been extended through April 5 in part to give students more time to make travel arrangements (and there is no charge to stay in your residence hall during spring break).

Look at flights toward the end of the extended break; they may be less costly.

Enterprise car rental announced today they will help our students get home by reducing the age to rent a vehicle to 18 and waiving the young driver fee. For more information see enterprise.com/studenttravelassistance or call (1-844-624-4412).

If you have already paid most or all of your Term III balance, it is possible you will be owed a refund once your room and board charges and (if applicable) financial aid are recalculated. If you believe you will have a refund AND you need those funds to purchase travel home, please contact Financial Aid to request an expedited update of your student account. Provided you are enrolled in E-Refund, any refund due could be issued as soon as 1-2 business days. Note that expedited refunds will ONLY be made for students for whom the immediate refund is essential to pay for travel home. So that we can prioritize these most urgent situations, all other refunds will be processed when updated student account statements are made available (anticipated mid-April).

If the cost to get home remains prohibitive, consider petitioning to stay on campus for Term III.

If I will be participating in Term III distance learning while in residence on campus…

How does this affect my bill?

A single board plan for simplified dining service in Warch Campus Center will be available for students in residence during Term III. All students living on campus for Term III will be enrolled in this board plan. Pricing for this board plan will be announced soon. The board fee for Term III will be adjusted accordingly.

How does this impact my financial aid?

Your financial aid for Term III will not be affected as long as you are enrolled full-time.

When is payment for Term III due?

We are hoping to have all student accounts adjusted by mid-April. At that time, your updated student account statement will be available to you.

If you haven’t paid your Term III balance, the March 15 due date currently listed on your statement is no longer in force. Payment will be due approximately two weeks after your updated student account statement is available.

If you are on a monthly payment plan, Lawrence will adjust the payment amounts and dates for the April and May payments.

What if the last-minute change of plans created a financial difficulty for me?

Our goal is to maintain Lawrence’s strong commitment to affordability and ensure that finances do not prevent any Lawrentian from completing this academic year. If your financial circumstances have changed significantly due to coronavirus (COVID-19) or Lawrence’s shift to distance learning, contact the Financial Aid Office. Your unique circumstances will be taken into consideration when determining your eligibility for financial aid.

What if I have more questions related to financial aid or my student account?

We are working quickly and closely across campus to try to anticipate the impact this change will have on students’ academic programs, cost of attendance, financial aid, and financial challenges. We will continue to update this and other COVID-19 pages on the Lawrence website and communicate with the Lawrence family as additional information becomes available. If you have specific questions, contact us at financial.aid@lawrence.edu, student_accounts@lawrence.edu, or coronainfo@lawrence.edu.

If your family’s financial situation changes now or in the future, our financial aid colleagues are ready to assist you with a special circumstances review process.
