2023 Chicago Business Trek

Lawrence University’s annual Chicago Business Trek is taking place over Spring Term reading period May 4-5, 2023 with planned stops at employers like BCD, Madison Dearborn, McKinsey & Co., iHeartRadio, Nuveen, CME Group, and Northern Trust.

To participate, students need to complete a brief online application explaining your interest in Business by April 3 and attend an orientation before the trip. There is no cost to attend, and all class years and majors are welcome to participate! Apply today! Space is limited to 25 people.

2023 Staff Chili Cook-Off Winners!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the 2023 Staff Chili Cook-Off and to our 13 chefs who prepared and shared their special recipes with us! It was wonderful to be in community again and sample amazing chili.  

We are excited to announce the 2023 winners:

1st Place (and second time winner) – Holly Laird of Campus Services for her White Chicken Chili. Holly wins the Traveling Crock Pot Trophy!

2nd Place – Mariah Staelens of Auxiliary Services for her Irish Chili

3rd Place – Cole Hepburn of Athletics Giving for his Fire Chili

The Staff Chili Cook-Off Has Been Rescheduled!

The Staff Chili Cook-Off has been rescheduled to Wednesday, March 8, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Somerset Room (WCC). Faculty and Staff are invited to sample and vote for the best chili. Help us crown a new LU winner!

Internship Funding Available – Apply Now!

Are you thinking about summer plans and need funding for a project or internship? Good news – internship funds are available and you are invited to apply now! Read on for details and apply online here.

What does the funding pay for? Financial support (up to $5000) for unpaid or low-paying internships, service work, self-designed projects to further your career exploration, and/or mentored research projects.

How do I apply? Complete an online application on the Career Center’s Get Money page.

When should I apply? The priority deadline is March 31, 2023 and after that it will be on a rolling basis until all funds have been awarded.

From Lawrence to Hollywood Series

The Lawrence Community is invited to the upcoming From Lawrence to Hollywood Series on Sunday, Nov. 13th & Monday, Nov. 14th, featuring Jacob Dalton ‘17 and his new film “Dangerous” (Note: Film is rated R and features violent content).

LA-based filmmakers Jacob Dalton, a 2017 Lawrence alum, and his producing partner, Adam Moses, will be on-campus to pre-screen their film and meet with students to talk about what it’s like to be on a film set, make a film on a budget, be entrepreneurs, and make it all work in a city like LA.

The series includes:

  • Film Prescreening and Q&A – Sunday, November 13th 6-8pm (Warch Cinema)
  • Lunchtime Lecture – Monday, November 14th 12:30-1:30pm (Chapman Hall, Room 202)
  • 1:1 Chats – Monday, November 14th 2:00-3:30pm (Career Center) – sign up required

Chicago Council on Global Affairs – Career Lunch with Elizabeth Shackelford

Chat with Elizabeth Shackelford, Senior Fellow from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and former career diplomat with the State Department on Monday, October 17th, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in the Career Center (Chapman Hall). Shackelford is a former career diplomat with the State Department and will share stories from her career, provide her perspective on the many global challenges facing the United States today, and answer your questions. The Career Center will provide light refreshments, but feel free to bring your lunch! Space is limited so reserve your spot on Handshake today!

InfoSession: Funded Opportunities Abroad

Are you interested in learning, working, or researching outside the U.S., either as an undergraduate or after graduation? Attend this virtual InfoSession on Tuesday, May 3rd from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. CDT to hear about several different opportunities, including the Gilman, Watson, and Fulbright Fellowships. Brian Pertl (Conservatory), Lezlie Weber (Study Abroad) and Claire Kervin (Fellowships Advising) will introduce you to your options! Join us on zoom and register on Handshake.

Backstage Pass – Spring Term

Join us for a field trip to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, located in downtown Appleton, on Friday, April 22 from 12:30 – 1:40 p.m. This event will focus on arts administration and business operations with Maria Van Laanen, President & CEO, Nick Resising, Chief Audience Development Officer, and Lisa Shovan, Chief Finance Officer.

Shuttles will be leaving the Con Drop Off and go to the PAC at 12:30 p.m., and head back to Lawrence when the program finishes at 1:40 p.m. The formal program will begin promptly at 12:45 p.m. Please register in Handshake!

Harvard Business School Online Summer Program (CORe)

Are you interested in a business career or learning business concepts for a side gig? If so, the Career Center is excited to support first-year and sophomore students who wish to pursue Harvard Business School’s Credential for Readiness (CORe) online program this summer. CORe consists of three courses—Business Analytics, Economics for Managers, and Financial Accounting — and a final exam.

The Career Center will cover the cost of a portion of these classes for students whose applications are approved.  Apply by the priority deadline: April 29th. See program details and apply here.
