Puerto Rico Relief Drive

Dear Lawrentians,

Almost four weeks after Hurricane Maria barreled through Puerto Rico, the island and its people continue to be subsumed in misery and desperation:

more than 85% of Puerto Ricans do not have electricity; approximately 40% do not have running water; those who do cannot drink it as that water is contaminated; many lack access to food, medication, and fuel due to island-wide shortages; approximately 50% have no access to communications; many are experiencing health crises as hospitals are unable to provide effective care.

Many logistical challenges have prevented aid (e.g. clean water, food, and medicine) from getting into the hands of Puerto Ricans. In response to this challenge, three student organizations–Lawrence International, ¡VIVA!, and Alianza—and the Spanish Department formed a coalition and identified four island-based grassroots organizations that are effectively and efficiently delivering aid to those who need it most. We are now asking for your help in supporting these organizations.

Please see the attached poster.  If you would like to support one or more of these organizations, follow the “click here” prompts directly next to the organization name. The links lead to sites that will enable you to send aid or make a donation. Clicking on the names of the organizations to the left, will provide more information on each of the organizations on the list.

We hope you are able to join us in sending relief aid to our fellow U.S. citizens, and we also invite you to share this poster with your friends, family and colleagues.

If you have any questions, please contact us via email at luprdrive@gmail.com.

Thank you all for your generosity,

Spanish Department
¡VIVA!
Alianza
Lawrence International

United Way Pledge

We are committed to supporting our community through the work we do and the resources we share. We are pleased to introduce this year’s United Way employee giving campaign “Live United”. I would like to express my gratitude to those who have generously contributed to United Way in the past. Your gift has made a real and lasting difference to individuals and families right here in our community. Investments have helped support basic needs for those in our community who need them the most to become financially stable and have access to critical healthcare services. This year, the United Way will continue to advance the common good by focusing on education, income, health and basic needs.
More information about how to make a payroll deduction pledge will be discussed at the all-staff meeting on October 17th and through email communication.

Reminders – PHAs, Flu Shots, Wellness Fair

October is a big month in wellness for us here at Lawrence. We started out the month with the annual PHA’s (Personal Health Assessments) and we’ll soon be in the midst of flu clinic season.

If you haven’t already, please take a few minutes this week to go online and complete the PHA questionnaire.  Once you’ve finished the questionnaire, you’ll immediately get your full PHA report. This report summarizes both your lifestyle habits and your biometric score (from your labwork, blood pressure, height and weight measurements) and provides individualized recommendations for improving your health.

Please email (laurie.ehlers@lawrence.edu) or call (832-7498) if you’d like to set up an appointment to review your report in person, or to discuss strategies for implementing any of the recommendations.  Also, please note Laurie will be reaching out to those with elevated results (glucose, cholesterol, PSA, or blood pressure) to make sure you are aware of the findings and have a strategy for addressing this with your healthcare provider.

Flu season is right around the corner! In fact, this year Wisconsin saw its first influenza cases earlier than usual, in September. The height of flu season typically occurs in November through March, and an annual vaccine is the best way to protect yourself from getting the flu and spreading it to others. Please stop by one of the upcoming flu clinics to get your vaccine and help keep the Lawrence community healthy this season.

Lawrence Wellness Fair                 10/18/17              11 am – 1 pm and 6 – 8 pm

Warch Campus Center                   10/24/17              11 am – 1 pm in the Esch Hurvis Room
