Thank you for all you do,

Ken Anselment

Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid

Thank You from Ken Anselment

The worst snowstorm in decades brought out the best of the Lawrence community earlier this week.

Your warmth and hustle metaphorically melted 21+ inches of snow to create a warm and welcoming environment for about 100 visitors who, themselves, braved nasty (and, at times dangerous) conditions to come from places like California, New Mexico, Texas, Chile, Japan, and—of course—the upper Midwest to experience Lawrence before they make their final college decisions by May 1.

Those students and their families left Lawrence with evidence that this is a community that hustles and cares in extraordinary ways:

You plowed and shoveled back-straining snow to clear the lots and paths around campus…

You prepared food on the fly and showered our guests with cookies (so many cookies)…

With classes cancelled Monday—effectively wiping out an entire day of open house programming—you answered our 11th-hour call for volunteers to come in impromptu mock classes and presentations…

You opened your house for an improvised reception that turned into a 60-person pizza party. (I’m looking at you, Mark Burstein and David Calle)…

You got out of bed early to trudge through the snow and play fiddle music to greet our guests at 8:30 Monday morning…

Colleges like to talk about their warm, welcoming, and caring communities—but on Sunday and Monday, Lawrence University showed it in ways our visitors (and I) will never forget.

Thank you doesn’t seem like enough, but—on behalf of your friends on the admissions & financial aid team—I think we know how George Bailey feels at the end of It’s a Wonderful Life when the entire town comes together to help him in his time of greatest need.

Your generosity is extraordinary.

You are the Lawrence difference.

A new chapter for Craig Gagnon

It turns out that a scuba diving trip has a funny way of clearing one’s mind…

Upon returning from a diving vacation with his wife, Ann, Craig Gagnon (our Associate Vice President of Communication, and a 1976 Lawrence graduate) decided that he kind of likes this vacation thing so much that he’d prefer to do it more often. Which is why, on Tuesday, April 10, he sent the following message to members of the Lawrence family:

Dear friends and colleagues,

I’ve always found it difficult to strike a balance between work and personal life. For most of my career, the balance has tilted toward work. It’s now time for it to swing the other way. That’s why I’m announcing my retirement this summer.

Lawrence teaches the value of lifelong learning and there’s much I still want to learn. I’m planning to use the coming months to treat myself to a sabbatical of sorts: to travel with my wife, to explore some neglected interests and to recharge before setting off in new directions.

As many of you know, Lawrence has been an important part of my life. First as a student, then as a volunteer, later as president of the alumni board and finally as a proud member of the staff. Thanks to all of you who have made this a wonderful journey. It’s been a privilege to work in a community of dedicated and passionate colleagues in support of an outstanding institution. I look forward to seeing you at campus events for many years to come.

Cheers,

Craig

After ably leading Lawrence’s Office of Communication for more than six years, Craig plans to work full-time through commencement in June, at which point, he will transition to part-time status through the end of July. In the meantime, a search for the next leader of our communication team will begin in May, with the hope of having that person on board in time to take full advantage of Craig’s experience and expertise in the transition.

Stay tuned for details about a retirement celebration for Craig… which may or may not be themed around diving.

Special Event Announcement and Parking Request

On Friday, March 30 the admissions office will host LUX – Lawrence University Experience – an open house for applicants and their families. If you see our guests on campus, please make them feel welcome! Many of them will be Lawrentians in the fall. Special thanks to all of the staff who will be doing presentations, providing a great lunch and making our facilities welcoming for this important event. Also, if possible, please find an alternate spot to park to leave room for our guests in the parking lots.

Admissions Tours for Candidates

As the Admissions office continues to receive more and more visits from prospective students, and given the limitations of our student tour guiding staff, we are no longer able to offer personalized tours to every candidate visiting Lawrence on a job interview. Rather, we would like to invite departments to schedule their candidates on one of our regularly scheduled campus tours, which can be done by e-mailing Kathy Hogan. Our tour schedule is below for reference.

We will continue to schedule personalized tours for senior staff candidates only (President, Provost, etc.), which can also be scheduled through Kathy.

For questions, please contact Jen England at x6840.

Thank you for your continued support!

LUX: New name, slightly new program for admitted students

On Thursday night, Feb. 23 and Friday, Feb. 24, we will welcome dozens of applied and accepted students to Lawrence for our first admitted student open house of the year. We have renamed the program LUX, where we will be shining a light on the Lawrence University experience. (We trust families will not confuse this with our library friends’ search tool of the same name.)

This February program is an addition to our programming this year. We will still offer our two programs in April (9–10 and 23–24). For students who applied and were admitted through one of our Early Action rounds, we are offering this program to capitalize on peak interest at the right time, rather than making them wait till April for “the good stuff.”

For more about the program, please visit the LUX page.

Note to faculty and coaches: In previous open houses, we have encouraged your attendance at lunch to meet and mingle with families. We have changed up the programming, inviting local alumni to mix and mingle at lunch, so you need not feel obliged to attend lunch. (We will not turn you away, however, if you do choose to attend.)

Prospective student open house Oct. 10

Lawrence is hosting the first of three fall open houses for prospective students on Monday, Oct. 10. Thank you to all of the faculty, staff and students who are participating.

If you see guests on campus, please say hello and smile. If someone looks lost, please offer to help.

Additionally, if you are driving to campus that day and you are able to park on a side street or north of College Avenue, our guests will be grateful to have an easier time finding parking.

Many thanks for making Lawrence a warm and welcoming community!
