Lunar New Year Celebration

Happy Lunar New Year! We will be celebrating the year of the tiger in person on Saturday, January 29 and virtually on Sunday, January 30 this year with Chinese Student Association, Korean Culture Club, Lawrence International, Pan-Asian Organization, and Vietnamese Culture Organization. The event will include a lion dance, cultural presentations, and cultural expo.

Off-Campus Programs Application Deadline Extended to February 8

The application deadline for 2022-2023 Off-Campus Programs has been extended to February 8, 2022. If you are planning to apply to any of our 50-plus affiliated study abroad programs or domestic off-campus opportunities, please have your application submitted by that date. The deadline for London Centre applications remains March 1, 2022.

If you have any questions about your application or if you want to know more about a program you are interested in, please contact OffCampusPrograms@lawrence.edu or drop into our office hours.

Thursday: (2/3): Grocery Bag Bingo- Mead Witter, 7-8:30pm & Movie Showing: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella- Warch Cinema, 8pm and 11pm

Friday: (2/4): U- Stuff IT- Somerset, 5-7pm&  Movie Showing: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella- Warch Cinema, 8pm and 11pm

Saturday (2/5): Broomsball- Ormsby Lake, 2-3pm & Bumper Cars (tentative, the alternative is karaoke night) 

Due to COVID-19 concerns, the President’s Ball will be rescheduled for Spring term. Be on the lookout for our first ever Spring President’s Ball!

MLK Day of Service-January 17th, 2022

Lawrence University’s annual MLK, Jr. Day of Service invites the entire campus community to participate in fellowship through service, dedicating our efforts to Dr. King and his legacy of community, equality, and activism.

Students, staff, and faculty will honor the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through education, service, and celebration. Being involved in these special programs will give each of us an opportunity to learn, advocate, and engage alongside one another – creating a deeper sense of community for us all.

Educational Programming:
9:00am-10:30am: “Black, White, and (Un)Read”: Exploring how media can ignore and misrepresent minority audiences, on- and off-campus (VIRTUAL).

11:00am-12:00pm: Mapping MLK’s Legacy Through Geographies of Oppression, Radical Protest, and Ecofuturism.

12:00pm-1:00pm: Interdisciplinary Discussion of Dr. King’s Rhetoric.

Service Programming:

1:00pm-4:30pm:
Thanks to our new partnership with Volunteer Fox Cities, we are able to offer a mix of in-person, remote, and virtual service opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. These projects include, but are not limited to:
*Digital Document Transcription for the Smithsonian
*Preparing a meal for a local homeless shelter
*Winter cleaning at a local food pantry
*Writing greeting/thank you cards to local nonprofit staff Supporting a local clean energy campaign
*Participating in a virtual “read aloud” program

31st Annual FOx Cities MLK Day Celebration:
6:00pm-7:30pm: Our programming will conclude with the annual Fox Cities MLK Day Celebration keynote address. This year’s keynote speaker is Judge Yadira Rein, the first person of color to serve as a judge in Outagamie County.
Sponsored by Lawrence University, City of Appleton, United Way Fox Cities, Appleton Area School District, and African Heritage, Inc.; ft. the LU Concert Choir.

Accepting Applications for Off-Campus Programs

Off-Campus Programs is currently accepting applications for 2022-2023 off-campus study. If you are interested in study abroad or participating in a domestic off-campus program, you need to apply by February 1, 2022.

Please note, London Centre applications are due March 1, 2022.

Due to Orange status and the departure time of Curt to his new role, the official LU sendoff for Curt Lauderdale that was scheduled for January 11th has been postponed.

Lawrence University’s New Partnership with Valley Transit

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT! We are thrilled to announce that Valley Transit is now partnering with Lawrence University! This new pilot program will allow students to use Valley’s services for free if they provide their student ID.

“I am grateful to Valley Transit for their partnership, which will make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students and their engagement with our surrounding community,” said Lawrence University President Laurie Carter.

Valley Transit’s mission is to connect our communities through customer-focused transportation. “Our team works hard each day to help people find their place in the community by eliminating transportation barriers,” said Valley Transit general manager, Ron McDonald. “This new partnership is truly a community-driven effort to expand access.”
