CLERMONT, Fla. — Taylor Dodson’s double in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in the winning run as the Lawrence University softball team downed Rochester Institute of Technology 5-4 in a nonconference game on Tuesday.
Anna Wawiorka and Tierney Duffy both went 2-for-3, and Amanda Jaskolski drove in two runs for the Vikings (5-3), who have won three straight. Kara Vance went the distance for Lawrence to pick up the victory.
The game was tied at 4-4 heading to the eighth, and using the international tiebreaker rule, Sam Killian was placed at second for the Tigers (1-6). A ground ball moved Killian to second, but Wawiorka snared a line drive to third for the second out. Vance then got McKenzie Martin to fly out to end the inning.
Jaskolski started at second to begin the bottom half of the eighth, and Dodson ripped the first pitch for a double to plate the winning run.
Lawrence took a 1-0 lead in the second when Dodson walked and later scored on Duffy’s single. RIT took the lead right back with two runs in the top of the third, but Lawrence tied it in the bottom half of the inning. Wawiorka led off with a triple and scored on Jaskolski’s ground ball to tie the game at 2-2.
RIT added two more runs in the fourth, but Lawrence tied it up in the fifth. Marisa Thackston stared the rally with a double and later scored on Wawiorka’s single. Wawiorka later scored on Jaskolski’s two-out single to tie the game at 4-4.
Sierra Valentine went the distance, allowed eight hits and took the loss for the Tigers.
