Vikings host Thanksgiving Showdown this weekend

The Lawrence University hockey team hosts the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association/Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Thanksgiving Showdown this weekend at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Lawrence and Marian University represent the MCHA, and the College of St. Scholastica and St. Norbert College are from the NCHA. Lawrence faces St. Scholastica on Friday night and the Vikings take on St. Norbert on Saturday night.

Saunders earns MCHA weekly honor

Lawrence University hockey standout Huck Saunders has been named the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Freshman of the Week.

Saunders (Seattle, Wash./Northwood School), a forward, led Lawrence two a weekend sweep of Lake Forest College and picked up his first career goal in the process.

In Lawrence’s 4-1 win over visiting Lake Forest on Nov. 12, Saunders picked up a pair of assists. He followed that with the game-winning power-play goal in Lawrence’s 4-2 victory at Lake Forest on Nov. 13. Saunders, who scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left in the third period, also added an assist in the win.

Saunders has one goal and six assists on the season for seven points.

Lawrence, which is 5-1-0 and 4-0-0 in MCHA play, returns to action this weekend when it hosts the MCHA/NCHA Thanksgiving Showdown at the Appleton Family Ice Center. Lawrence faces the College of St. Scholastica on Friday and St. Norbert College on Saturday.

Vikings complete weekend sweep with 4-2 win at Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Huck Saunders’ first collegiate goal proved to be the game-winner Saturday night and lifted the Lawrence University hockey team to a 4-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lake Forest College at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.

The victory completes a weekend sweep by Lawrence (5-1-0, 4-0-0 MCHA) of the home-and-home series. The Vikings won 4-1 Friday night in Appleton.

Saunders broke a 2-2 tie with a power-play goal with just 1:56 left in the game. Matt Hughes, who picked up an assist on Saunders’ goal, then sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with five seconds remaining.

Lawrence grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when Jacob Esch scored off assists from Derek Brickan and Jon Sheridan. Lake Forest (2-2-0, 2-2-0)  tied it with a power-play goal with just 19 seconds left in the opening period.

The Vikings struck back with Brad Scurfield’s power-play goal at 6:17 of the second. The lead didn’t last long as Lake Forest scored 2:06 later with a power-play goal of its own.

The score remained 2-2 until Saunders scored late in the third.

Lawrence goaltender Evan Johnson stopped 30 shots to pick up the win.

Lawrence tops Lake Forest 4-1

The Lawrence University hockey team scored twice early in the third period to pull away and post a 4-1 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lake Forest College Friday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

The Vikings (4-1-0, 3-0-0 MCHA) led 2-1 entering the third period but scored twice in the first 6:24 of the period to pull away.

Lawrence goaltender Evan Johnson stopped 23 shots to pick up the win.

Lake Forest led 1-0 in the first period before Brad Scurfield scored at 14:20 to tie the game. Lawrence took the lead for good just 1:36 later when Matt Hughes scored off a pass from Scurfield.

The score remained 2-1 until early in the third period. Lawrence’s John Orrico got sent off for interference, but the Vikings picked up a short-handed goal at 3:05 to take a 3-1 lead.

Lawrence made it 4-1 when Jacob Esch scored off a pass from Jesse Byam-Katzman at the 6:24 mark.

Lawrence outshot the Foresters 40-24.

Vikings take on Lake Forest in home-and-home series

The Lawrence University hockey team takes on Lake Forest College in a home-and-home series this weekend. Lawrence faces Lake Forest at the Appleton Family Ice Center on Friday night and then travels to Lake Forest on Saturday night to wrap up the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association series.

Lawrence is coming off a sweep of Concordia (Wis.) University, and Lake Forest opened its season last weekend by taking a pair of games from Finlandia University.

Record-breaking effort earns Johnson MCHA Defensive Player of the Week honors

Lawrence University goaltender Evan Johnson was named the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week after breaking a school record this past weekend.

Johnson (Suwanee, Ga./Pomfret School) broke the school record for victories when he earned win No. 31 this past Saturday at Concordia (Wis.) University. Johnson broke the record of 30 set by Andrew Isaac from 2003-07.

Johnson earned victory No. 30 this past Friday when he stopped 28 shots in Lawrence’s 5-1 win over Concordia. He then entered Saturday’s game in the second period with the Vikings trailing 4-1. He made eight saves, including three in a two-man advantage for Concordia late in the game, to earn the record-breaking victory.

Johnson, who has been named MCHA Defensive Player of the Week three times, is now 3-1-0 on the season with an .890 save percentage and 3.30 goals against average.

Lawrence returns to action on Friday and Saturday when the Vikings face Lake Forest College in a home-and-home series.

Vikings top Concordia to complete series sweep

MEQUON, Wis. — The Lawrence University hockey team rallied for a 5-4 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Concordia (Wis.) University Saturday night at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

The win completes a weekend series sweep for the Vikings (3-1-0, 2-0-0 MCHA), who beat the Falcons 5-1 at home on Friday night.

Lawrence goaltender Evan Johnson picked up career win No. 31 to break the school’s wins record. Andrew Isaac, who finished his career in 2007, had set the mark at 30.

The Vikings trailed 4-3 entering the third period but scored twice early in the third and then killed off multiple penalties in the closing minutes to secure the win.

With Lawrence trailing 4-1, Matt Hughes scored two goals in a 23-second span to get Lawrence back in the game. Hughes scored at 17:59 and again at 18:23 to trim the margin to 4-3.

Lawrence didn’t wait long into the third period to take the lead for good.

Jon Sheridan scored juat 1:02 into the third period to tie the game at 4-4, and freshman John Orrico followed with a goal at the 2:54 mark to give Lawrence a 5-4 edge.

Lawrence then killed off four power plays in the third period, including three in the final 6:22, to seal the win.

Szkodzinski breaks wins record as Vikings top Concordia

The Lawrence University hockey team opened Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association play on Friday night with a 5-1 victory over Concordia (Wis.) University and Vikings head coach Mike Szkodzinski became the winningest coach in school history in the process.

Szkodzinski, just starting his fifth season at Lawrence, picked up career win No. 51 to pass Dave Ruhly for the top spot on the all-time list.

Lawrence scored three times in the third period to break open a close game, and several Vikings had career firsts in the contest.

Lawrence led 1-0 after the first on Jacob Esch’s goal at the 8:02 mark. William Thoren scored his first career goal at the 15:23 mark of the second to give Lawrence a 2-0 lead.

The Vikings then broke it open midway through the third period. Brandon Berquam got his first career goal at 11:04, and Josh DeSmit followed with a power-play goal at 11:38 to make it 4-0.

Ben Friedman scored his first career goal late in the third period to round out the scoring for the Vikings.

Evan Johnson made 28 saves to pick up the win for the Vikings.

Vikings drop puck on MCHA play this weekend

The Lawrence University hockey team gets its Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association season going this weekend with a two-game series with Concordia (Wis.) University.

The Vikings host Concordia on Friday and travel the Milwaukee area to face the Falcons on Saturday. Lawrence has split its two nonconference games to open the season, and Concordia is looking for its first victory of the campaign.

Big second period lifts UWEC past Lawrence

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Eau Claire hockey team scored five times in the second period and went on to a 6-2 nonconference victory Saturday night at Hobbs Ice Center.

Eau Claire (1-0-0) trailed 1-0 heading into the second period but scored twice in a 27-second span to take the lead and pulled away from there.

Lawrence (1-1-0) led 1-0 when Brad Scurfield scored on the power play at the 4:49 mark of the first period.

Tim Possehl tied it for the Blugolds 3:11 into the second period, and Isaiah Bennis then scored on the power play at 3:38 to give Eau Claire the lead. The Blugolds added goals at 7:59, 11:23 and 14:02 to lead 5-1 after the second.

Bennis scored early in the third period for his second goal of the contest, and Ross Janecyk scored twice for Eau Claire.

Reijo Wahlin scored midway through the third period for Lawrence to trim the lead to 6-2.

Lawrence went 1-for-6 on the power play, and the Blugolds were 2-for-9. The Vikings were whistled for 16 penalties totaling 62 minutes. Eau Claire took 12 penalties for 43 minutes.
