Pioneers rally to hand Lawrence first conference loss

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Carroll University men’s basketball team rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to down Lawrence University 81-79 in a Midwest Conference game Tuesday at Van Male Field House.

Kyle Jones poured in 28 points to pace Carroll (5-6, 3-3 MWC). Paul Grosshuesch added 14 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.

Jon Mays paced Lawrence (6-5, 5-1) with 25 points. Erik Borresen had his third consecutive double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Crisman added 18 points.

Lawrence led by as many as 10 points in the second half when Borresen hit a layup for a 66-56 lead with 6:42 left.

Carroll responed with a 17-5 run over the next 3:53 to take a 73-71 lead with 2:49 remaining. The Pioneers hit 7 of 9 shots from the floor during that stretch and went 3-for-4 from the foul line.

Lawrence got a free throw from Borresen with 2:17 left to cut the lead to 73-72, but Grosshuesch countered with a layup for a 75-72 edge.

After Mays missed a layup, Jones hit two free throws to push the lead to 77-72 with 57 seconds left. Mays got a layup for the Vikings off a pass from Chris Siebert, who finished with a career-high nine assists, to cut the lead to 77-74.

Freshman Brian Gryszkiewicz then stole the ball from Jones with 39 seconds left. Carroll fouled Borresen with 25 seconds left, but he missed both free throws.

Carroll then made four consecutive free throws to push the lead back to 81-74 with 10 seconds left. 

Gryszkiewicz got a layup for the Vikings with five seconds left, and Jones turned the ball over seconds later. Mays hit a 3-pointer to cut the margin to two points, but that came as time expired.

Lawrence returns to the road this weekend when it travels to Grinnell College and Monmouth College.

Vikings hit the road again for weekend series at Finlandia

The Lawrence University hockey team takes to the road for the second consecutive weekend when it plays a Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association series this weekend at Finlandia University.

The Vikings play at Finlandia at 7:35 p.m. Friday night and at 4 p.m. on Saturday. All times are Eastern.

Lawrence split a weekend series at Northland College this past weekend.

Lawrence blows out Bucs

The Lawrence University men’s basketball team turned in a superb defensive effort and rolled to a 63-42 Midwest Conference victory on Saturday over Beloit College at Alexander Gymnasium.

Erik Borresen turned in his second consecutive double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to pace Lawrence (6-4, 5-0 MWC), who are alone in first place in the MWC.

Chris Siebert, who was a perfect 3-for-3 on 3-pointers, added 11 points. Conor Klusendorf added 10 points, eight rebounds, one thunderous block and a pair of steals.

Michael Horton led Beloit (3-8, 2-4) with 11 points and David Bremner added 10.

Lawrence limited Beloit to 27.8 percent shooting from the floor (15-54), including 24 percent (6-25) in the second half. The Bucs hit on only 3 of 16 shots (18.8 percent) from beyond the arc.

The game was tight throughout the first half and was tied for the eighth time when Tyler Butke converted a three-point play to even the score at 24-24 with 3:34 left.

Klusendorf answered with a layup for the Vikings and Lawrence closed the first half on a 7-0 run to grab a 31-24 lead at the half.

Lawrence pushed the lead to 39-26 on Siebert’s 3-pointer with 15:48 left, but Beloit fought back. The Bucs cut the lead to 44-37 on Butke’s jumper with 9:57 left, but that was as close as they would get.

Lawrence then scored the game’s next 12 points to take command with a 56-37 lead. Borresen had four points in that run and Jon Mays added three. The Vikings would go on to lead by as many as 23 points.

Lawrence travels to Carroll University on Tuesday for the first of three consecutive road games next week.

Scurfield’s goal powers Lawrence over Northland

ASHLAND, Wis. — Brad Scurfield’s power-play goal with 6:07 left lifted Lawrence University to a 3-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Northland College Friday night at the Bay Area Civic Center.

Scurfield, who has a team-high five power-play goals on the season, scored off assists from Matt Hughes and Jameson Raymond to break a 2-2 tie.

Evan Johnson stopped 22 shots to pick up the victory for Lawrence (7-4-1, 5-2-0 MCHA). The Vikings outshot the Lumberjacks (3-9-0, 2-5-0) 35-24.

Northland got the on the board first when Chad Liley scored on a penalty shot at 15:50 of the first. Lawrence quickly tied the score at 1-1 when Jesse Byam-Katzman scored with just 2:04 left in the opening period. Freshmen Huck Saunders and Paul Zuke picked up assists on that goal.

Hughes then gave Lawrence the lead at 2-1 just 6:18 into the second period when he scored an even-strength goal with assists from Scurfield and Byam-Katzman.

Northland tied the score at 2-2 four minutes later on Colin McIntosh’s goal.

Lawrence looks the series sweep when it faces the Lumberjacks on Saturday afternoon.

Lawrence rolls past Monmouth to remain unbeaten in MWC

The Lawrence University men’s basketball team pulled away early and ran to a 73-40 victory over Monmouth College on Wednesday to remain unbeaten in the Midwest Conference.

The Vikings (5-4, 4-0 MWC) got 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds from Erik Borresen, who posted his fifth double-double of the season. Jon Mays paced the Vikings and all scorers with 21 points.

Cory Bishop led Monmouth (2-8, 0-5) with 11 points and six rebounds.

The game was tied 7-7 when the Vikings scored the next 10 points, capped by Chris Siebert’s 3-pointer with 12:29 left in the first half. Siebert finished with 10 points and a game-high six assists.

Monmouth trimmed the margin to six points at 22-16, but Lawrence closed the first half on a 15-0 run. Borresen scored five points during that outburst and Siebert added four.

After Bishop scored the first two points of the second half, Lawrence quickly pulled away. Borresen had a three-point play, Mays scored four points and Tyler Crisman nailed a 3-pointer in a 10-0 Lawrence run to give the Vikings a 47-20 lead with 17:05 left.

Monmouth would get no closer than 23 points the rest of the way, and the Vikings would lead by as many as 33 points.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Beloit College.

The Lawrence University men’s basketball team gets back to Midwest Conference play with a pair of games this week.

The Vikings host Monmouth College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, and Beloit College comes to Alexander Gymnasium at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Lawrence is looking to snap a two-game losing streak, but the Vikings remain unbeaten in Midwest Conference play at 3-0.
