Winter wins 800 free to pace Vikings at Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Taylor Winter picked up an event victory for the Lawrence University swim team, but the Vikings fell in a dual meet at Lake Forest College on Saturday.

The Forester women won 151-70, and the Lake Forest men won 121-42.

Winter won the 800-meter freestyle in 9:42.81, and she grabbed second in the 400 freestyle in 4:44.21. Paige Witter took a pair of second-place finishes for the Vikings. She was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:11.49 and second in the 200 freestyle in 2:18.43.

On the men’s side, Travis Charlow and Stephen Salansky both recorded a pair of second-place finishes. Charlow was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:15.31 and second in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.34. Salansky grabbed second in the 200 individual medley in 2:33.30 and second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.37.

Vikings split dual with Illinois Tech

APPLETON, Wis. — Three Lawrence University women’s swimmers won two events apiece to pace the Vikings to a dual meet victory over the Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday at Boldt Natatorium.

The Lawrence women defeated Illinois Tech 138-74. On men’s side, Illinois Tech topped the Vikings 151-42.

Lawrence’s Taylor Winter took home wins in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:28.78, and she won the 1,000 freestyle in 11:08.22. Paige Witter swam to victories in the 200 freestyle in 2:00.22 and in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.68.

Lawrence’s Eryn Blagg also grabbed a pair of wins, finishing first in the 50 freestyle in 26.91 seconds and in the 100 freestyle in 57.41 seconds.

Emily Flack picked up a victory in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.78, and the 200 freestyle relay won in 1:46.73 for the Vikings.

Lawrence earned two victories on the men’s side. Travis Charlow won the 200 freestyle in 1:55.06, and Christian Bell took first in the 50 freestyle in 23.48 seconds.

Witter paces Vikings at Chicago Invitational

CHICAGO, Ill. — Lawrence University standout Paige Witter placed in the top five in three events to pace the Vikings swim teams at the University of Chicago Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Witter grabbed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.39 and placed fifth in both the 200 butterfly (2:18.34) and 500 freestyle (5:23.87). Led by Witter, the Lawrence women were fourth with 525 points.

The top finisher on the women’s side was the 800 freestyle relay team of Witter, Taylor Winter, Emily Flack and Emei Thompson, which placed third in 8:15.24.

Winter also grabbed fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:22.48, and Flack took home fifth in the 200 freestyle in 2:03.01.

The 200 freestyle relay team and 400 medley relay team both placed fourth, and the 400 freestyle relay team was fifth.

On the men’s side, Travis Charlow was the top finisher for the Vikings with a seventh-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 59.22 seconds. The 200 freestyle relay team also took seventh in 1:37.26.

The Lawrence men were sixth in the team standings with 172 points.

Record-breaking performance nets Cardinal MWC Swimmer of the Week honor

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University swimming star Hayley Cardinal has been named the Midwest Conference Swimmer of the Week in the wake of a record-setting performance.

Cardinal (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East), a junior, broke three Lawrence records and posted NCAA “B” cuts in two events to lead the Vikings to a 129-105 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Dec. 12.

Cardinal won the 100-yard breaststroke and broke her own school record with a time of 1:04.44. Cardinal also grabbed first in the 200 breaststroke and broke her own school record with a time of 2:21.82.

Cardinal posted NCAA “B” cuts in both events. She now owns the ninth-fastest time in the nation in the 100 breaststroke and has Division III’s 12th-fastest time in the 200 breaststroke.

Cardinal also took first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:12.50 to break her own school record. She also swam on Lawrence’s winning 200 medley relay team, which took first in 1:56.63.

The Vikings return to action on Jan. 9 when they compete at the University of Chicago Invitational.

 

 

Cardinal breaks trio of records to lead Vikings over UW-Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Hayley Cardinal broke a trio of school records en route to three event victories on Friday to lead the Lawrence University women’s swim team to a nonconference victory over UW-Oshkosh at Albee Hall.

The Lawrence women won 129-105, and the Titans defeated the Lawrence men 115.5-53.5.

Cardinal won the 100-yard breaststroke and broke her own school record with a time of 1:04.44. Cardinal also grabbed first in the 200 breaststroke and broke her own school record with a time of 2:21.82.

On the men’s side, Travis Charlow paced the Vikings with wins in both the 100 and 200 freestyle.

Cardinal wins twice to pace Vikings at UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. — Hayley Cardinal won a pair of events on Saturday to pace the Lawrence University swim teams in their dual meet at UW-Whitewater.

The Warhawks defeated the Lawrence women 116-86, and the Whitewater men won 108-30.

Cardinal led Lawrence by taking home victories in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. Cardinal won the 200 breaststroke in 2:28.82, and she took first in the 200 IM in 2:19.68.

Taylor Winter was a winner in the 500 freestyle in 5:28.87, and Paige Witter grabbed first in the 200 butterfly in 2:18.16.

Vikings take three of four at Lawrence Triangular

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University swim teams took three of four duals on Saturday in the Lawrence Triangular at Boldt Natatorium.

On the women’s side, Lawrence defeated Ripon College 129-67 and the Vikings defeated the Marquette University club team 156-14. The Lawrence men defeated Marquette 84-42, but Ripon downed the Vikings 92-60.

Taylor Winter and Hayley Cardinal led the Lawrence women by winning a pair of events apiece. Cardinal took first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:19.26 and grabbed the top spot in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.67. Winter won the 500 freestyle in 5:24.89 and took first in the 1,000 freestyle in 11:04.87.

On the men’s side, Travis Charlow (200 freestyle) and Grant Wilkie (100 freestyle) were winners for the Vikings.

Lawrence swimmers split with Beloit

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University swim teams split their dual meet with Beloit College on Saturday at Boldt Natatorium.

The Lawrence women routed Beloit 157-44, but the Beloit men topped the Vikings 104-70.

On the women’s side, three Lawrence swimmers won multiple events. Taylor Winter swam to victories in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Lawrence’s Paige Witter took the top spot in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Hayley Cardinal swam to victories for Lawrence in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.

Travis Charlow led the Lawrence men by winning the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

Cardinal grabs pair of top finishes to pace Vikings

BROWN DEER, Wis. — Hayley Cardinal posted a pair of top-seven finishes to lead the Lawrence University swim teams at the Wisconsin College Swimming and Diving Showcase at the Schroeder Aquatic Center.

Cardinal grabbed fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:31.88, and she took seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.12.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Emei Thompson, Eryn Blagg, Paige Witter and Taylor Winter grabbed sixth in 3:53.04. The 200 medley relay team of Cardinal, Emily Flack, Witter and Foley Van Lieshout was seventh in 1:55.54.

On the men’s side, Travis Charlow was the top finisher for the Vikings. He took 24th in 100 freestyle in 52.32 seconds and was 24th in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.59.

Lawrence swimmers named Scholar All-America team

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s swimming and diving team has been named a Scholar All-America Team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.

To be eligible for the award, the team must have a grade point average of at least 3.0. Lawrence posted a team grade point average of 3.38 among its 24 student-athletes. Sixteen team members also earned Academic All-Midwest Conference honors to lead all teams on campus.

Lawrence was one of four Midwest Conference schools to earn the award. Beloit College, Grinnell College and Knox College also made the cut.
