The Week Ahead: January 16-22

APPLETON, Wis. — The Vikings will all be on the road this weekend as the teams get deep into the heart of the winter season. Lawrence University basketball hosts Lake Forest College on Wednesday, and the Vikings then travel to Beloit College on Saturday. Lawrence hockey travels north to St. Scholastica for a big Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series this weekend. The Lawrence swimmers get a preview of a Midwest Conference heavyweight when the Vikings travel to Lake Forest College on Saturday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (2-11, 0-8 MWC)

Opponent: Lawrence vs. Lake Forest (3-10, 2-6 MWC)

Fast Fact: Senior forward Pete Winslow might still be smoldering because he was on fire over the weekend. Winslow went 10-for-13 from 3-point range for a blistering 76.9 percent. Winslow went 5-for-6 on 3-pointers in the win over Cornell and was 5-for-7 in the victory over Illinois College.

Fast Fact: Lawrence forward Nick Felan broke a four-game scoreless streak in a big way this past weekend at Aurora. Felan assisted on both goals in Friday’s overtime tie and then scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in Lawrence’s 5-3 victory on Saturday.

Second-quarter burst sparks Lady Blues past Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — A second-quarter run Saturday staked the Illinois College women’s basketball team to a double-digit lead, and the Lady Blues went on to an 83-44 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University at Alexander Gymnasium.

Illinois College finished the first half on a 16-5 run to grab a 47-30 at the break and pulled away from there.

Carly Cameron led Illinois College (9-4, 6-2 MWC) with 14 points.

Leah Reeves paced the Vikings (2-11, 0-8) with 12 points, and she pulled down seven rebounds. Olivia Hoesley added 11 points for Lawrence, and Aubrey Scott grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

The Lady Blues built a 13-point lead at 29-16 late in the first quarter when Lawrence rallied. Scott hit a jumper at the first-quarter buzzer, and Hoesley opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 29-21.

Lawrence’s Nicole Cummins and Cameron traded baskets before Reeves’ jumper trimmed the lead to 31-25 with 6:41 left in the second quarter.

Brielle Greenleaf then hit a 3-pointer for the Lady Blues, who outscored the Vikings by 11 over the remainder of the quarter. McKenzie Skaggs’ layup at the buzzer gave the Lady Blues the 47-30 lead at the half.

Illinois College steadily pulled away and led 61-39 after three quarters, and the Lady Blues’ biggest lead was the final margin.

Rams run away early, post win over Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — The Cornell College women’s basketball team jumped out to a big early lead Friday and posted an 80-41 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at Alexander Gymnasium.

Sierra Bisso led first-place Cornell (9-3, 7-0 MWC) with 17 points as she hit 7-of-10 shots from the floor. Anne Visser added 16 points off the bench.

Shonell Benjamin paced Lawrence (2-10, 0-7) with eight points, and she pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Aubrey Scott added seven points and six boards for the Vikings.

Cornell got out of the gate quickly by scoring the game’s first eight points. Lawrence didn’t get on the board until Benjamin’s layup with 4:30 left in the opening quarter. Nicole Cummins drained a 30-foot 3-pointer for the Vikings at the first quarter buzzer, but Cornell led 17-5 after one.

The Vikings hung with the Rams in the second quarter and were down 28-13 with 4:14 left, but Cornell pulled out to a 35-17 lead at the half.

Cornell opened the second half on a 12-2 run to build a 47-19 advantage. Lawrence didn’t get closer than 26 points the rest of the way.

The Week Ahead: January 9-15

APPLETON, Wis. — It is a big weekend at Alexander Gymnasium as the Lawrence University basketball teams play four games in the historic venue. Lawrence takes on Cornell College on Friday night, and the Vikings face Illinois College on Saturday afternoon. Lawrence track also opens its season on Friday as the Vikings travel to UW-Oshkosh for a meet at Kolf Sports Center.

Fast Fact: Lawrence opens its season at the alma mater of its coach, Jason Fast. Fast was a member of UW-Oshkosh’s 2002 NCAA Division III national championship cross country team. He later served as an assistant coach at Oshkosh before taking over the cross country and track programs at Lawrence.

The Vikings trailed by just six points with less than five minutes remaining before the Scots pulled away. A big stat for the Vikings was a 38-29 edge on the glass, and that’s the first time Lawrence has out-rebounded an opponent this season.

Scots pull away late to top Lawrence

MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Monmouth College women’s basketball team pulled away in the final five minutes Saturday and went on to a 72-57 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at Glennie Gymnasium.

Leah Reeves scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace Lawrence (2-9, 0-6 MWC). Olivia Hoesley added 13 points, and Lauren Deveikis had nine points and a team-best four assists for the Vikings.

Maddie Dohleman scored 16 points to lead three Monmouth players in double figures.

Lawrence trailed by double digits at 53-42 with two minutes left in the third quarter but the Vikings rallied. Lawrence went on an 8-2 run, capped by Deveikis’ layup, to trim the margin to 55-50 with 7:09 remaining.

The teams traded baskets before Izy Todd hit her second consecutive 3-pointer to trigger a 9-0 outburst that gave Monmouth (2-9, 2-4) a 67-52 advantage with 1:58 remaining.

Aubrey Scott, who finished with eight points and seven rebounds, then hit a 3-pointer for Lawrence to finally stop the run. Hoesley followed with a jumper to cut the lead to 67-57 but that’s as close as the Vikings would get.

Monmouth went 5-for-6 from the foul line in the final minute to seal the victory.

The Scots led the entire game but didn’t pull away from Lawrence until the final minutes. Monmouth led by as many as six points in the opening quarter but back-to-back 3-pointers from Scott and Deveikis helped cut the margin to 18-16 after one quarter.

Monmouth went up 24-16 early in the second quarter, but the Vikings scored seven consecutive points, including five from Hoesley, to cut the lead to 24-23. The Scots went back up by six, but Shonell Benajmin’s jumper in the final seconds of the second quarter trimmed Monmouth’s lead to 35-33 at the half.

Strong second quarter powers Knox past Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — A big second quarter Monday pushed the Knox College women’s basketball team to a 75-57 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at Alexander Gymnasium.

Knox outscored the Vikings 19-2 over the final 7:32 of the second quarter to turn around a close game. The Prairie Fire led 42-24 at the half.

Jarrelyn McCall led Knox (6-4, 3-2 MWC) with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Knox had a balanced attack with three players in double figures and six players with at least nine points.

Aubrey Scott led three Lawrence players in double figures with 12 points, and she added six rebounds. Leah Reeves added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Vikings (2-8, 0-5), and Olivia Hoesley had 10 points and nine rebounds. Shonell Benjamin grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Vikings.

The Vikings trailed 23-17 after the opening period, but Reeves got a layup and Scott buried a 3-pointer to cut Knox’s lead to 23-22 with 8:14 left in the second quarter. Knox then hit four 3-pointers, sandwiched around a layup, to pull out to a 37-24 edge.

The Vikings opened the second half with a 3-pointer from Nicole Cummins and Hoesley jumper to cut the lead to 42-29. Knox immediately stretched the lead back to 47-29, but the Vikings scored six straight points, capped by Lauren Deveikis’ jumper, to cut the margin to 47-35.

Knox then put the Vikings away by scoring the final 10 points of the third quarter with Karlie Thorn’s 3-pointer giving the Prairie Fire a 57-35 lead after three. Lawrence didn’t get closer than 18 points in the fourth quarter.

APPLETON, Wis. — It’s a full week of games for nearly all the winter season teams as basketball tips off 2017 with games on Monday afternoon. Lawrence gets back into Midwest Conference play with games against Knox and Monmouth this week. Reeves averaged 16.7 points while shooting 55 percent from the floor to go with 5.7 rebounds in her last three games. Reeves, who scored a career-high 24 points vs. Widener, has taken over the team lead in scoring at 10.0 points per game.

Fast Fact: Junior forward Ben Peterson averaged nearly a double-double in the Vikings’ two games at the JustAGame Field House against a pair of WIAC foes, including unbeaten UW-Whitewater. Peterson averaged 12 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in those two games and is now averaging 11.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Senior forward Mitch Willer shot 65 percent from the floor in the last two games, and his shooting percentage actually went down. He’s hitting at a 67.1 percent clip from the floor while averaging a team-high 15.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest.

Strong first half leads Cardinals past Lawrence

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s (Minn.) University women’s basketball team pulled away in the first half Thursday and went on to a 72-51 nonconference victory over Lawrence University at Saint Mary’s Gym.

Brandi Blattner posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to pace Saint Mary’s (8-3). Sam Jones also scored 17 points for the Cardinals.

Leah Reeves poured in a game-high 19 points for Lawrence (2-7), and she pulled down a team-best seven rebounds. Aubrey Scott added eight points for the Vikings, and Olivia Hoesley and Grace Minogue had seven points apiece.

Saint Mary’s pulled out to a 19-4 lead just five minutes into the game, and the Cardinals led 24-13 after the first quarter. Minogue scored the first five points of the second quarter for the Vikings to trim the lead to 25-18.

Saint Mary’s rebounded to stretch the lead to 44-27 at the half. The Cardinals led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter, but consecutive baskets from Shonell Benjamin, Scott and Reeves cut the margin to 58-43 after three periods.

Nicole Cummins then drained a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter to pull Lawrence to 58-46. The Cardinals scored the game’s next six points, and Lawrence didn’t get closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
