First Trimester of Junior Year at LU in Nutshell

by Romelle Loiseau on November 21, 2013

Ninth week of Fall trimester at Lawrence already! Whew! Time flies so fast when I am at school. Junior year is so busy but, I gotta say, I’m really diving into my major and am feeling very comfortable with Biology now. My highschool didn’t have too much of a scientific emphasis, but now I really feel like I belong in the lab half of the time.

I just start working out with the women’s LU basketball team; they are limited in numbers due to injuries so their coach, Ashely Wellman, asked me if I could come help fill in during practices. Tonight was my first workout with them, and it was just enough to remind me that I am out of shape! Those girls are so fast-paced. Either way, I had a good time and got a good sweat out of it too. I’m excited for their season opener this weekend.

I have spent some time talking with my academic adviser, Nancy Wall, a few weeks ago. It’s always great to catch up with her, and digest what’s going on so far in the term, as well as plan for the rest of the academic year. I am planning to meet with my Posse scholar program adviser and history professor, Jason Frederick. He and I meet to talk about my academic progress as well, but also converse about my plans for break, my mental health, and other really random stuff. He meets with all of the students in my posse scholar program (7 other students) to do the same thing. I couldn’t have asked for a better combo of professors to be my adviser during my time at Lawrence.

I’m studying biology and am planning to attend mortuary science school with hopes to become a funeral director one day. That usually weirds people out, but it is what I want to do. I applied to for a position as an intern at a funeral home out in Queens, New York during last summer and they have finally given me a call back! I’m very excited! This will allow me to have some first hand experience in that sort of environment, hopefully just reinforcing my hopes to work in that field. I will definitely update about it in the future and write about how it went.

It’s crazy to think that I will be home just at the end of the month. I’m very excited to see my family. Being from New York, I am a long way from home, so when I get to go home for Winter and Summer break, I do my best to appreciate all of the time I have there.
