About NSSE

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

The NSSE is a national survey which annually collects information at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. Survey items represent empirically confirmed “good practices” in undergraduate education. That is, they reflect behaviors by students and institutions that are associated with desired outcomes of college.

How is the data used?
Institutions use their data to identify aspects of the undergraduate experience inside and outside the classroom where they are performing well and those that can be improved through changes in policies and practices more consistent with good practices in undergraudate education. This information can also be used by prospective college students, their parents, college counselors, academic advisers, institutional research officers, and researchers in learning more about how students spend their time at different colleges and universities and what they gain from their experience.

Most recent data
The 2010 NSSE data includes responses from 293 randomly selected Lawrence students. In all, the far-reaching national sample for the survey is more than 363,000 students at 603 colleges and universities.

Lawrence University has participated in NSSE eight out of the past 11 years. The most recent benchmark data for Lawrence can be accessed using the links on the left side of the screen.
