Balancing A Lifestyle at Lawrence University.

by Romelle Loiseau on November 6, 2013

My name is Romelle and I’m a biology major from New York City. I attend Lawrence University through a youth leadership development scholarship program named “The Posse Foundation”, a program aiming to introduce diversity to college campuses all over the country, and to lead intelligent and persistent youth into the workforce. There are ten students awarded the full-tuition scholarship every year. This year, two students from my Posse scholar group are studying abroad in Europe.

This is my third year at Lawrence University and by far the most intriguing. This year, I’m taking mostly classes in my major, which is awesome. I’ve been more motivated for academics this term than I have ever been in the past. I’ve been conducting field research for my Aquatic Ecology course with a few buddies of mine; spending one day a week on a lake has really kept things sweet for me. I enjoy being outdoors and am getting class credit to do so! It’s a phenomenal course. For a weekend, the class went up to Manito-wish, Wisconsin to survey a few lakes for a field research report. The sites were beautiful, and really encouraged me to get to know my classmates a little better. I’m a photographer outside of the classroom and I couldn’t have asked for a better place to shoot in the fall. Absolutely beautiful!

Aside from academics, I play intramural basketball at Lawrence as well. This term, the intramural league for basketball is only three on three. In the Winter and Spring, it becomes a full court, five person sport, and is very competitive. Basketball is my thing; I take it seriously. Still, I can’t help but smile and laugh when I play with the guys here. In intramural basketball, it’s fun for everyone.

I have been working as the Men’s Soccer team student manager since the Summer. We’ve suffered a lot of injuries and we didn’t make conference this season, but I can confidently say that the younger guys are catching on quickly and show great potential for the future. We practice six times a week and travel to away games together. I have enjoyed working as a manager this season and absolutely look forward to doing the job again during my senior year at Lawrence.

One of my buddies teaches a fighting/martial arts class here, three times a week. Recently, he put together a fundraising charity event titled ‘Fight Back’, a program that raised money for breast cancer awareness by teaching young Lawrence students basic self-defense and awareness technique. This fundraising event was run through his fraternity organization, Sigma Phi Epsilon.

While I am eager to finish up the term and head back to New York to be with my family for the holidays, I’m thoroughly enjoying my time here as much as I can until then. There is always something to do and someone to see. I’m excited to check back in within a few weeks. See you then!
