Dorms! A guide to living options for incoming freshmen

by Clare Lauer on April 21, 2015

Hello again!

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted, and I hope everything has been going well since I last have. Today I have a fun topic that I get to cover for you guys! Normally, I try to give some examples of what’s going on in my life. Which, as intriguing as that can be, I’m not going to do this time. Instead, I’m going to use a more structured approach and talk with you about the different dorms on campus! Now, although that may seem like a random topic, think again. As a blogger for Lawrence’s Admissions, I’m pretty sure most people reading my posts will have some interest in what dorm options Lawrence has to offer.

SO – to get started, I’ll give you a rundown of the amenities most dorms have. They include WIFI, computer and printer access (with free printing), lounges that usually include a television, and sometimes a piano and a fireplace. There are also microwaves and sinks located on most floors, and a communal kitchen space with a stove and refrigerator. Laundry rooms and bathrooms with sinks, showers, etc. are available as well.

Here’s a link to a campus map, for a better sense of where the dorms are located!

There are seven main residence halls on campus that house freshman: Colman, Ormsby, Plantz, Sage, Kohler, and Trever. Hiett Hall is also another dorm on campus, but it is only available to upperclassmen. Although the residence halls are fairly similar, they each have a uniqueness to them. Currently, I am living in Colman Hall, and did as well my freshman year. Colman has sinks in every room, and a nice large main lounge with a piano, fireplace, and many movies are shown on a projector in there too. Also, the Panhellenic Wing, which is home to the chapter rooms of the sororities on campus, is in Colman. Ormsby is an older dorm, therefore most of the rooms have higher ceilings. As a hall, Ormsby also hosts several fun campus events including a carnival-esque Ormsby Zoo Days, and the green in front of the dorm becomes the Ormsby Lake for Lawrence’s Winter Carnival.

Plantz Hall is the only residence hall on campus next to the Conservatory (fondly known as the Con), so it naturally becomes a popular location for Con students. However, there’s definitely a mix with students from the College as well. The dorm also has a great lounge area that is frequently used to show movies, and a piano is centered in the main lobby. Sage Hall is the most central of all the dorms on campus. It is right next to the Warch Campus Center, which can be a huge bonus during Winter term. Sage also has a large basement area that works well as a place to study, and can double as a place to throw events. Right between the Admissions Office and the Volunteer Center is our next dorm, Kohler. As the only substance-free dorm on campus, Kohler can provide a quieter living environment. It is also the tallest building on campus, if you enjoy living on the 6th or 7th floor. And, it also has sinks in each dorm room. Finally, Trevor Hall is the last living option for incoming freshmen. It lies on the edge of campus, but is still close to the Campus Center. Also, it sits looking over the river, and a beautiful nature trail is right behind the dorm as well.

There you are! I hope this gave you a better look into the living options for incoming freshmen at Lawrence. No matter the dorm, there will be a fun community awaiting you, and a new space to make your own!
