Reading Period

by Matthew Geleske on October 25, 2015

Fall reading period is here. No class on the Thursday and Friday of Week 6 combined with the weekend means a glorious four days fall weather, football, and Netflix. Campus takes on a particularly relaxed atmosphere as many students use the long weekend to travel and visit their families. This is our time to unwind. Oh, and do a tiny cosmically insignificant thing called homework. Yes, while reading period at Lawrence is a great time to relax, many students use the fall break to catch up on work, projects, and, who knew, reading.

Over this reading period I took the time to do some traveling myself to film some footage for my final project in my Documentary Forms class. This is one of those projects that seems almost too good to be true. I get to use Lawrence’s state of the art film equipment to travel down to Wrigley Field to try and capture some of the spirit of the Chicago Cubs’ most recent playoff run. The Cubs are my pride and joy, and being able to incorporate the team into my schoolwork is very cool. I was also able to snag an interview with Bob Vorwald, WGN producer of all Cub games. Homework isn’t supposed to be fun, how did I get so lucky? I was also able to spend some time with my parents and friends, relationships that are a valuable and sometimes underrated part of being healthy and successful during a stressful school year. Spending time away from campus was a great time to get a change of scenery and relax a little before getting ready for the end of the term.

After returning from Chicago on Friday night, I spent the rest of the weekend enjoying some beautiful fall weather on campus. The middle of fall term is one of the best times of the year and is a great time to enjoy the outdoors.

This is what it would look like if I spent any of my Sunday outside. I, however, have slightly different preferences for my Sunday afternoons. Football season is here, and while the Packers reign over this area, the various backgrounds of students here offer a unique potluck of football fans who support different teams. My Sundays are often spent hanging out with the guys in my fraternity watching the games and pretending to do homework.

Reading period is something that all Lawrence students look forward to and a welcome break in the middle of the term. Now we turn out sights towards 7th Week, a week signaling the beginning of the end of this term and the push to the finish.
