Relay for Life

YAY! SPRING TERM! Three cheers for everyone finally coming out of hibernation… did the campus just get 10 times bigger?? Time to put all of my winter clothes away (well, knowing Wisconsin, I’d better wait on that) and break out the sandals. Lawrence is such a happy place during Spring Term; time to lay out on the Main Hall green or meet up with your friends in the quad. The promise of warmer, happier days is what gets us through the Wisconsin winter!
Speaking of the quad, just last weekend I participated in the Relay for Life that took place there because Wisconsin suddenly decided to have an 80 degree day after snowing earlier in the week… making it warm enough to have the event outside! Relay for Life is an event that raises money to help fight cancer. So we all got to hang out with friends and soak up the sun, all while supporting an important cause. My team was made up of some of my sisters from Delta Gamma and we were able to raise $3,240, which won us some goodies for being the team with the most amount of money raised! But the biggest reward came from knowing that we had helped to make a difference.

One of the coolest parts of the day was the live bands that were playing at the Relay for Life. It was not surprising to me that we would have many live bands, because so many events at Lawrence have live music! But after talking to my friends at other colleges, I quickly realized that this is actually rather unusual. This is just one of the many perks of having a conservatory of music here at Lawrence. Even if you are not involved in the Conservatory, many of the people you meet are very interested in music and therefore we have lots of bands! It also makes for lots of concerts to attend (my peers are SO incredibly talented).
The Relay for Life was very well done, and though we spent most of it laughing and walking with friends, taking silly photo booth pictures (yes there was a photo booth), buying yummy snacks to raise money and soaking up the sun, we still had time to reflect on the seriousness of what we were fundraising for, and how many people have been affected by this terrible disease.

Having fun at the photo booth with my team!

It was so awesome to see the Lawrence community come together this way. We also got to hear a story of Lawrence’s very own Professor Kathy Privatt, who I had for a class during Fall Term, really hitting home that it could affect anyone at any time.
The day was very heart warming, and we all enjoyed ourselves coming together for this event (though I feel sorry for the few individuals who may have left their sunscreen in their room). It makes me look forward to one of the best events at Lawrence that will be happening over Memorial Day weekend, and everyone is already talking about it! It’s called LU-aroo, and it’s a big music festival in the quad. It is going to be extra exciting this year because The Tallest Man on Earth will be headlining the festival!
There are so many things to look forward to during Spring Term, and the overall feel of campus is just happier, which makes the weeks fly by! Not to mention the beautiful flowers and buds that will be coming very soon, Lawrence looks beautiful during every season but I am happy it will be warm enough to enjoy it (this term). Everyone can make it through Winter Term when there is warm weather and fun events ahead. I can’t wait! But be careful, because spending so much time outside might make you reluctant to do your work, so you’ve got to work on the right balance!
