Greek Week!

by Olivia Bell on May 23, 2016

Last week was a super busy one because it was GREEK WEEK! During Spring Term, all of the fraternities and sororities on campus put together a week of events to raise money for different charities and organizations. It’s a great week even if you are not a part of a fraternity or sorority, because you can still participate in the different activities!

The week starts off with Lip Sync! It’s a really fun event where all the fraternaties and sororities create a dance/routine to any songs we want and then have to lip sync to them and the judges pick the top three! My sorority, Delta Gamma, actually placed first this year, which was super exciting because we spent a lot of time practicing, but mostly it was just really fun putting it all together and performing. It was so great to watch the other groups perform too; they were so good, and really funny!

On each of the following days, there was an event put on by each organization. First there was a food eating contest, then we had our event (which I’ll explain later), and there was also a kick ball game, a pancake breakfast, a carnival, a dancing event, an ice cream social, an outdoor basketball game and music trivia! There were so many fun events that lots of people came to participate in – something to take our minds off of all the studying ahead (finals are just a few weeks away – yuck). Greek Week is also a great way to mix and meet new people while participating in or even just watching the events. A lot of the students come out to enjoy the spring weather and embrace that we no longer need to stay huddled up in our rooms. Everyone is in high spirits, and it was a really fun week.

My sorority’s event was Anchor Splash. I helped plan the event and it took place in our Wellness Center at the pool! We have groups sign up who do not have to be sororities or fraternities; it can be anybody who can make a five member team. The teams each get a captain, or two, from Delta Gamma, who will help them with all the different relays and parts of Anchor Splash. On the day of the event it is known as “Spot a DG”, and we all wear our Anchor Splash shirts and teams have to take pictures with DGs all day (up until the event) to earn points for their team! A lot of the teams were able to get a picture with almost the whole chapter. Then the event is at the pool and all the teams participate in different relays; most are swimming down the lanes and collecting an item or having to swim with an inflatable across the pool. But the really fun part is that, afterwards, the teams have to come up with a synchronized swimming routine! And when the event is all over we all get to jump in the pool.

It was a really fun event to put on, and to watch. But the important part was that the event raised money for Service for Sight, an organization to help the visually impaired. Teams paid a fee to join, and we sold raffle tickets as well as other things to help raise money.

Greek week is a really fun week, and you do not have to be in a sorority or fraternity to have a good time; everyone has fun who comes out to join and participate! It is also a nice feeling to know that by joining in, you are helping to support other organizations such as Service for Sight. It really gives you a sense of the community we have here at Lawrence. It really is a great place to be.
