Reading period is a favorite time for many Lawrentians. You may ask “What is reading Period?”
So, to answer your questions I asked a few of my friends to explain what reading period is.
“Reading period is a time to relax, recuperate and catch up in the middle of the term. Despite the name, there is not much reading involved, unless you’ve been neglecting your studies. In my experience, most midterms (if any) take place before this small break, so studying is not always necessary. The days off count as a time to catch up on sleep and practice some much-needed self care. Life at Lawrence can be fast-paced and hectic; these small breaks allow for us students to step back and slow down, even if it is only for a few days.” – Lizzy Weekes ‘18
“Reading period is a 4-day break from class during our 6th week of the term, traditionally used to study for midterms. Teachers are sometimes generous, though, and schedule midterms before the reading period, so it can be an opportunity to go home, go on a camping trip, go to Björklunden, or hang around campus with your friends. Lots of relaxation can be done during reading period, or lots of reading! Since during this most recent reading period it was so nice out, I spent a lot of time lazing around outside.”- Suzzane Hones ‘17
“During each trimester at Lawrence University, there is a reading period about halfway through. Reading period is a 5 day weekend/break that allows us to prepare for upcoming midterms without becoming overwhelmed and stressed out. However, many of us end up taking our midterms before the reading period and so instead we use reading period to catch up on sleep, relax, socialize and do some of the fun hobbies we do not usually have time to do throughout the school year! Thank god for reading period.” – Elkin Garcia ‘17
“Reading period is a time for students to relax and de-stress after midterms. It gives people a chance to recover before finals set in.” -Teddy Kortenhof ‘18
Now that reading period is almost over for us, we are going back to start another week at Lawrence. The weather is pretty nice here and we hope it stays this way. So, get excited if you are coming to Lawrence this year or are planning on coming sometime soon, because the campus is waiting to welcome you!
