It’s that time of the year again! We’ve survived the cold of winter term, and we’re ready for a change: spring term! Although the weather in Wisconsin is still pretty chilly and cold, it warms up pretty fast. At Lawrence, spring term is usually a breath of fresh air after a tough Wisconsin winter, and a great way to enjoy the sun, and classes. With the new season, there are also many more things that you can do on campus during spring term!
Already, spring term is starting off with a bang. Just in this first weekend, we have several incredible opportunities on campus. The biggest of these is “Breathe,” an opera being performed here at Lawrence. But here’s the twist: it’s performed underwater in a swimming pool (the Wellness Center, to be exact). It’s a project two years in the making, and to be honest, I can see why! It’s such a cool event, and it’s just one of the many great things available on campus during spring term.
Another great resource on campus is the conservatory! Every week, there are new concerts and performances there. For instance, every year the conservatory hosts the World Music Series, which is a set concerts of bands, groups, and ensembles from all over the world. These concerts occur throughout the year, including in the spring! However, there aren’t just professional concerts happening in the Con. As spring term comes around and the end of the school year approaches, a new opportunity begins to appear on campus: student recitals! Every music major performs in their own recital as part of their major requirement. They are a great opportunity to support our classmates for all of the hard work they’ve been putting into their instrument study, whether it’s for voice, cello, or piano. But if you don’t want to stay inside and you want to get out and enjoy the nice weather, there are plenty of opportunities outside as well!
There are several great opportunities on campus that involve the outdoors. First, there are several clubs that, with the turn of the seasons, will be kicking into gear as the term goes on! One of those is the Lawrence University Sailing Club. That’s right, we have a sailing club. While this isn’t exactly possible during the winter, as the weather gets better, you can find the sailing club at the Fox Valley Sailing school. Another great club is LU Women’s Lacrosse which, as you’ve guessed, is in season during the spring! As the weather gets warmer, you can find members of this club (women and men) passing a lacrosse ball on the green! A huge outdoor club is the ORC (Outdoor Recreation Club). This group organizes outdoor hikes and camping trips across the country, regardless of your past experience. One of the outdoor clubs with the biggest reach on campus, though, is SLUG (Sustainable Lawrence University Garden). You can see their reach throughout campus, whether it’s through the sustainable food they grow in their garden next to Warch, or their work on campus to make the Commons, and Lawrence, more sustainable. At the end of the year, Lawrence even throws LUaroo, a musical weekend at the end of the term where several student and professional groups perform out on the green! Lawrence has so many amazing opportunities during the spring! But in the end, our experience is what we make it!
