Alex Goodson blasted a three-run homer and Shannon Murray tossed a two-hit shutout as the Lawrence University softball team split a Midwest Conference doubleheader with Beloit College on Saturday at Whiting Field.
Beloit won the opener 9-2 and Lawrence took the nightcap 9-0.
Goodson went 5-for-6 in the doubleheader with a double, a homer and four runs batted in.
Lawrence (13-7, 5-4 MWC) jumped on Beloit (8-21, 5-6) early in the nightcap by scoring three times in the first. Murray belted a two-out, two-run triple to put the Vikings up 2-0. Emily Perish followed with a double to score Murray.
A dropped fly ball with two outs opened the floodgates in the second. After Cathy Kaye reached on the error, Katie Simonson singled to score Kaye. After an infield single by Gaelen Lombard-Knapp, Goodson belted a towering three-run homer to left for a 7-0 lead.
The Vikings added a pair of unearned runs in the third for the 9-0 edge.
Murray went the distance in the five-inning contest. The only two hits Murray allowed both came in the fifth. Murray struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter.
Beloit got all the offense it would need in the first inning of the opener. The Bucs scored seven runs, all unearned, to take control. Tess Jacquez had a two-run double in the inning, and Lawrence committed three errors in the frame.
Lawrence got both of its runs in the third. Dani Cherry tripled and scored on an error, and Goodson picked up a run-scoring double.
Katy Sandt went the distance to get the win. She struck out eight and walked four. Perish went the distance and took the loss.
Sarah Stariha went 4-for-4 in the opener to pace the Beloit offense. Goodson was 3-for-3 for the Vikings.
