Lawrence University goaltender Michael Baldino has been named the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week.
Baldino (Woburn, Mass./Milton Academy) won the honor after earning his first collegiate victory in goal this past weekend. The sophomore goalie made 33 saves in Lawrence’s 4-2 victory over the College of St. Scholastica on Nov. 26.
Not only was it Baldino’s first collegiate win, it marked the first time Lawrence had defeated St. Scholastica in seven tries.
With Lawrence holding a one-goal lead late and an extra attacker on the ice for the Saints, Baldino made a pair of saves in the final minutes. Lawrence then sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Baldino, who has played in three games this season, improved his save percentage to .908 and lowered his goals against average to 3.56.
Lawrence, now 6-2-0 on the season, returns to action Friday when it hosts Marian University in a MCHA contest at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
