Ripon tops Vikings in penalty kicks in MWC semifinals

RIPON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s soccer team battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Ripon College on Friday in the semifinals of the Midwest Conference Tournament, but the Red Hawks advanced after winning 4-3 on penalty kicks.

Ripon faces Carroll University in Saturday’s championship game.

Lawrence (9-7-2) got on the board right before the end of the first half when Jared Padway scored at the 43:27 mark to stake the Vikings to a 1-0 lead.

Ripon struck back early in the second half when Zach Hershoff scored to make it 1-1.

The score stayed that way through the final 32 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of two overtime periods.

The match went to penalty kicks and both teams converted their first three, with Karl Mayer, Stephen Exarhos and David Caprile all connecting for Lawrence. The Vikings missed the next two attempts, including one off the crossbar, and Matthew Lange converted for Ripon to give the Red Hawks the 4-3 edge.
