FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Marian University hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit and posted a 5-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Blue Line Ice Center.
Lawrence (6-4-0, 4-2-0 MCHA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 7:44 into the game.
Freshman Derek Brickan scored his first career goal at the 5:58 mark to give the Vikings a 1-0 edge. Lawrence made it 2-0 just 1:46 later when Brad Scurfield took a pass from Sam Johnson and scored his sixth goal of the season.
The Sabres (7-5-0, 5-3-0) cut the lead in half when Matt Williams, who had a hat trick, scored at the 9:58 mark. Matt Berger then scored on a penalty shot at the 18:36 mark to tie the game at 2-2.
It was the first time since Nov. 12, 2004, that a Lawrence opponent had taken a penalty shot.
Williams gave Marian the lead for good with a goal at the 3:46 mark of the second period. Dakota Dubetz then scored 59 seconds later give the Sabres a 4-2 edge. Williams completed the hat trick when he scored at the 6:59 mark of the third period.
Josh Baker stopped 28 shots for the Sabres to pick up the win. Evan Johnson made 49 saves for the Vikings.
