Lawrence men, women finish third at MWC Championships

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Lawrence University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished third at the Midwest Conference Championships, which wrapped up Sunday at Grinnell College.

Freshman Hannah Gabriel and junior Peter Brengel had the top finishes of the day for the Vikings.

Gabriel took second in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 18:17.76. She also teamed with Becca Hamlyn, Julia Heller and Chelsea Hameister on the 400 freestyle relay team, which placed third in 3:42.60.

Brengel broke the existing meet record in the 200 backstroke but that wasn’t good enough to defend his title in the event. Brengel took second in 1:53.54, and Grinnell’s Michael Brus won the title in 1:49.46.

Brengel teamed with Collin McCanna, Charlie Mann and Evan Flack to swim to third place in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:11.81.

The Lawrence women piled up 448 points, and Grinnell took the title with 894. Lawrence moved up four spots in the team standings from a season ago.

The Lawrence men had 484 points, and Grinnell won the title with 866. The Vikings moved up one spot from their fourth-place finish in 2010.
