Vikings power past Finlandia

HANCOCK, Mich. — Matt Hughes and Sam Johnson each scored a pair of goals, and the Lawrence University hockey team powered to a 5-1 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Finlandia University on Saturday.

The victory allowed Lawrence (4-3-3, 4-1-3 MCHA) to split the weekend series with the Lions (1-9-0, 1-7-0).

Finlandia struck first with a goal just 3:52 into the game, but that’s all the Lions would get against goaltender Peter Emery. He finished with 24 saves to pick up the win.

Defenseman Jameson Raymond tied the game just 2:04 later off assists from Hughes and Brad Scurfield. Hughes then scored on the power play at the 14:25 mark of the first to give Lawrence a 2-1 edge.

Johnson made it 3-1 when he scored only 23 seconds into the second period. Johnson got the next goal as well, on the power play at the 5:10 of the third period, to put the Vikings up 4-1.

Lawrence went 2-for-5 on the power play, and Finlandia was 0-for-8 against the Vikings’ penalty killers.

Hughes finished the scoring with his second goal of the night just 57 seconds later.

Lawrence peppered two Finlandia goalies with 35 shots. Dainis Vasiljevs started the game and took the loss for the Lions.
