Brian Berger scored 1:19 into overtime to lift the Marian University hockey team to a 4-3 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Friday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
Berger’s goal capped a rally by Marian (4-3-1, 4-2-0 MCHA), which trailed 2-0 entering the final period. This marks the third time in four losses this season by Lawrence (2-4-0, 2-4-0) in which the Vikings led entering the third period.
Brandon Boelter gave Lawrence a 1-0 lead at the 7:27 mark of the first period, and the Vikings increased that lead to 2-0 when Paul Zuke scored just 12 seconds into the second period.
Lawrence held that advantage until the Sabres got a 5-on-3 power play early in the third period. Brendan Roberts scored on the two-man advantage to trim the lead to 2-1 at the 5:19 mark.
The Sabres then tied it on Tyler Klein’s goal at the 13:12 mark, and Roberts scored his second goal of the game just 3:23 later to put the Sabres up 3-2.
Lawrence pulled goaltender Peter Emery late, and the Vikings got the equalizer with the extra attacker. Phil Bushbacher scored for Lawrence with just 24 seconds remaining to tie it at 3-3 and force the overtime.
Emery made 22 saves and took the loss, and Josh Baker made 22 saves for Marian to pick up the win.
