Schumacher’s career day nets MWC Player of the Week award

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University women’s basketball standout Katie Schumacher has been named the Midwest Conference Player of the Week.

Schumacher (Little Chute, Wis./Little Chute) picked up the award after a career day in Lawrence’s stirring 93-92 comeback victory at Knox College this past Saturday.

The sophomore forward hit career highs with 23 points and 16 rebounds as she recorded her first double-double of the season. Led by Schumacher finishing on the fastbreak against Knox’s pressure defense, Lawrence rallied from an 18-point deficit in the second half. The Vikings trailed by 12 with just over five minutes remaining and got a key jumper from Schumacher to help complete the comeback.

Schumacher, whose previous career highs were 17 points against Marian University and 15 rebounds vs. Finlandia University last season, led Lawrence to its first Midwest Conference road victory since the 2006-07 season. Lawrence had not won a road game in the league since a 71-55 victory at Beloit College on Feb. 10, 2007, a stretch of 54 contests.

On the season, Schumacher is averaging 9.5 points and a team-high 6.2 rebounds per game while shooting 46.0 percent from the floor. Schumacher also is Lawrence’s first conference Player of the Week since Laura Aerts won the award back on Jan. 4, 2010.

Lawrence returns to action on Monday night when the Vikings host Illinois College in a league contest.
