Winter takes title, records fall for Vikings at MWC Championships

GRINNELL, Iowa — Taylor Winter led a Lawrence University sweep of the top-three places in the 500-yard freestyle to pace the Vikings on the opening day of the Midwest Conference Championships on Friday.

Winter won the title in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:09.48 at Osgood Pool at Grinnell College. Lawrence’s Hannah Gabriel was second in 5:10.31, and teammate Paige Witter grabbed third in 5:14.83.

The Lawrence women, who are in third place with 128 points, also broke a pair of school records. Hayley Cardinal finished 10th in the 200 individual medley but broke the school record with a time of 2:14.65. The team of Emily Flack, Cardinal, Witter and Gabriel finished third in the 400 medley relay and broke the school record with a time of 4:01.68.

On the men’s side, Charlie Mann narrowly missed taking the title in the 50 freestyle. Mann finished second in 21.54 seconds and was edged out by Lake Forest’s Travis Johnson, who won in 21.41.

The Lawrence men are in fifth place with 85 points.

Competition resumes on Saturday and wraps up on Sunday.
