DETROIT, Mich. — Graham Jones placed seventh in men’s sabre to pace the Lawrence University fencing teams at Saturday’s NCAA Midwest Regional at the University of Detroit Mercy.
Jones went 3-6 during pool competition and then defeated Austin Carlisle of Detroit Mercy 15-6 in round two. John Hallston of Notre Dame beat Jones 15-9 to start round three. Ohio State’s Alistair Delchamps defeated Jones 15-10 to drop Jones into the seventh-place match. Jones then beat Cleveland State’s tom Bienvenu 15-12 for seventh.
In men’s epee, Lawrence’s top finisher was Moses Zarkin-Scott, who finished 12th. Zarkin-Scott went 2-3 in pool competition and was eliminated with a 12-3 loss to Cleveland State’s Paul Duchow in the second round.
Katie Blackburn was the top finisher for the Lawrence women as she took ninth in epee. Blackburn received a bye in the first round and then went 3-2 in pool play in round two. Blackburn was eliminated after a 10-3 loss to Ohio State’s Rebecca Rutan in the third round.
Shelby Guinn led Lawrence in women’s sabre with a 12th-place finish. She received a bye in the first round and then went 2-3 in round two pool competition. Guinn was eliminted with a 15-4 loss to Ohio State’s Alexa Antipas in the third round. Katherine Ling placed 13th for the Vikings in women’s foil. Ling went 4-1 in first round pool competition and followed that by going 1-6 in second round pool competition. Notre Dame’s Madison Zeiss then eliminated Ling 15-5 in round three.
