Vikings pull away late to rout Carleton

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team scored four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to down Carleton College 12-4 in a nonconference game on Tuesday.

Alex Chiodo went 3-for-3 and Anna Wawiorka was 3-for-4 to pace Lawrence’s 16-hit attack. Wawiorka and Amanda Jaskolski both homered and drove in a pair of runs. Alissa Geipel went 2-for-4 and also drove in two runs for the Vikings (4-3).

Lawrence had built leads of 2-0 and 4-2 with the help of home runs. Wawiorka hit a solo shot in the first and Jaskolski belted a two-run blast in the third, but Carleton tied it at 4-4 with two runs in the top of the fourth.

The Vikings pulled away for good in the bottom of the fifth. Taylor Dodson started the inning with a double, and Chiodo and Samantha Belletini followed with singles to score Dodson. After the Vikings loaded the bases, Geipel delivered a two-run single to put the Vikings up 7-4. Wawiorka then singled to score Savanna Marsicek for an 8-4 lead.

Lawrence then ended the game with four more runs in the sixth. The Vikings got a walk and an error to start the inning, and Brielle Bartes singled to drive in Chiodo with the first run of the inning. Jessica Demski followed with a single to score Cory Paquette and Lawrence led 10-4. An error in the outfield on Marsicek’s fly ball allowed Bartes and Tierney Duffy to score and end the game via the eight-run rule.

Kara Vance tossed three innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. She allowed three hits, struck out one and walked one.
