Jones takes 10th to lead individuals at MFC Championships

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Graham Jones finished 10th in sabre to lead Lawrence University in Saturday’s individual competition at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships at the University of Notre Dame.

Jones, the ninth seed, won a pair of matches before dropping a 15-10 decision to Notre Dame’s Alex Coccia in the round of 16.

Jake Hodges grabbed 18th place for the Vikings in foil. After going 6-0 in his pool, Hodges was eliminated with a 15-4 loss to the University of Michigan’s Geoff Marino in the round of 32. Moses Zarkin-Scott took 24th in epee to pace the Vikings. He went 4-1 in pool play and was eliminated after a 15-6 loss to Ohio State’s Matt Bogard in the round of 32.

Mariah Wilkerson was the top finisher among the women as she took 15th in epee. She went 5-1 in pool play and then advanced to the round of 16 before being eliminated 15-4 by Northwestern University’s Dina Bazarbayeva, who went on to win the title.

In women’s foil, Laura Barksdale placed 22nd to lead the Vikings. She went 5-0 in pool play but was beaten 15-11 by Northwestern’s Sarit Kapon in the round of 32. Shelby Guinn led the Vikings by placing 26th in sabre. She went 4-2 in her pool and was eliminted with a 15-5 loss to Northwestern’s Hee Kyung Oh.
