FOND DU LAC, Wis. — The Marian University hockey team scored with less than eight minutes left Friday and hung on for a 2-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association win over Lawrence University at the Blue Line Ice Center.
Derek Thorogood scored with 7:08 remaining to give the Sabres the win. Lawrence pulled goaltender Mattias Soderqvist for the final minute but could not get the equalizer.
After a scoreless first period, Lawrence grabbed a 1-0 lead on Gustav Lindgren’s goal at the 7:53 mark. Marian tied the game with just 1:33 left in the second period when Ben Morgan scored on the power play.
Marian was 1-for-3 on the power play, and Lawrence was 0-for-1 in a game that had only four penalties.
Soderqvist stopped 38 shots for Lawrence, and Mike Gudmandson made 25 saves for the Sabres.
The teams meet Saturday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center in the final game of the Battle of Highway 41 series.
