Vikings fall to Ripon in straight sets

APPLETON, Wis. — Alison Barnes pounded out 17 kills to lead the Ripon College volleyball team to a 3-0 Midwest Conference sweep of Lawrence University in a key match Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Ripon (10-12, 7-1 MWC) defeated the Vikings 25-15, 25-11, 25-19.

Barnes had just three errors in her 34 attempts to put together an impressive .412 hitting percentage for the match. The Red Hawks hit .294 on the afternoon. Emily Gary added nine kills, and Abbi Williamson had 36 assists for Ripon.

Megan Conley paced Lawrence with nine kills, and Cyra Bammer and Terese Swords added six apiece. Sydney Nelson led Lawrence (8-17, 6-3) with 13 assists and Lauren Ray picked up 11.

The win puts Ripon in the driver’s seat for a berth in the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament. Lawrence will need to defeat St. Norbert College on Wednesday and then get some help if it wants to make the tournament.
