COLUMBUS, Ohio — Lawrence University placed third in Sunday’s team competition at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships at Ohio State University.
The Lawrence men and women both took fifth place and that translated into third in the combined team standings with 1,270 points. Ohio State won with 1,605, and Michigan was second with 1,360.
Men’s foil led the way by placing third. The Vikings defeated Denison and Indiana before falling to Illinois in the semifinals. Lawrence then beat Case Western Reserve 5-4 in the third-place match.
Men’s epee finished fourth, posting wins over Case Western Reserve and Michigan State before falling to the University of Chicago in the semifinals. Michigan then topped Lawrence 5-3 in the third-place match.
Men’s sabre placed 13th, defeating Bowling Green in a play-in match before losing to Indiana in the first round.
On the women’s side, epee and sabre both took fifth and foil was sixth.
Women’s epee defeated McKendree in the first round and fell to Michigan State in the quarterfinals. The Vikings battled back in the consolation bracket to top Purdue 5-2 and Case Western Reserve 5-0 in the fifth-place match.
Women’s sabre topped Indiana in the opening round but lost to Ohio State in the quarterfinals. Lawrence defeated Purdue 5-4 and stopped Michigan State 5-4 for fifth place.
Women’s foil started with a win over Michigan State before falling to Wayne State in the quarterfinals. The Vikings defeated Case Western Reserve 5-1 in the consolation bracket but lost to Cleveland State in the fifth-place match.
