Nowak paces Vikings at NCAA regional

DETROIT, Mich. — Lawrence University fencing standout Jakub Nowak finished seventh Saturday to lead the Vikings at the NCAA Midwest Regional.

Competing in epee, Nowak posted a 5-6 record in the pool competition and scored 38 touches. Ohio State’s Lewis Weiss went 11-0 in pool play and went on to win the title.

Lawrence’s Kai Kramer finished eighth in foil and Nathan Schlesinger was ninth. Kramer went 3-7, and Schlesinger went 2-8. Schlesinger, a sophomore, missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Championships after earning a spot in the national meet last season.

Lawrence’s Joe Davis went 2-9 and finished 10th in sabre.

On the women’s side, Natalie Hagopian led the Vikings by taking ninth in foil with a 1-8 record. In a crowded women’s sabre field, Allison Kim finished 14th and Erin Paxson was 15th for Lawrence. Kim posted a 3-12 record, and Paxson went 1-14.

Lawrence did not have a competitor in epee.
