MONMOUTH, Ill. — Alex Tanney and Trey Yocum both had big days offensively to lead the Monmouth College football team to a 56-0 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Zorn Stadium.
Tanney, Monmouth’s All-America quarterback, completed 25 of 30 passes for 371 yards and three touchdowns. Yocum ran 20 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns. Monmouth (2-1, 2-0 MWC) piled up 682 yards of offense.
Lawrence was limited to only 190 yards of offense and was shut out for the first time since the 2009 season.
Lawrence quarterback Luke Barthelmess was 23 of 41 for 141 yards. Tyler Mazur was the top receiver for the Vikings with seven catches for 39 yards, and Sam Wagner had six catches for 50 yards.
Monmouth scored on its first two possessions, with Yocum scoring from two yards out to make it 7-0 and Stefan Flynn grabbing a three-yard scoring pass for a 14-0 lead.
The Scots also scored on its first four possessions of the second quarter, including a 73-yard touchdown pass to Mike Blodgett, to lead 42-0 at the half.
Monmouth added a touchdown midway through the third quarter and added another score early in the fourth quarter to wrap up the scoring.
Lawrence drove into Monmouth territory eight times but couldn’t come away with any points. Lawrence’s deepest penetration on the afternoon was the Monmouth 16 early in the second quarter, but the Scots got a sack on fourth down to stop that drive.
Darvis PridGeon had nine tackles to pace the Lawrence defense, and Preston Lumzy recorded nine stops, including 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks, to pace Monmouth.
Lawrence returns to action next Saturday when it hosts St. Norbert College in the Banta Bowl.
