APPLETON, Wis. — Shigenobu Kakudate scored 3:08 into overtime on Friday to lift the Finlandia University to a 4-3 victory over Lawrence University in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
The overtime goal spoiled a nice comback by the Vikings (5-17-2, 4-12-1 NCHA), who trailed by three goals late in the second period.
Kakudate scored the game-winner off assists from Travis Armstrong and Kevin Smith for his second goal of the night. He scored a short-hander in the second period that put Finlandia (3-19-1, 2-15-0) up 3-0.
Lawrence finally got on the board when Steve Hughes scored on the power play off passes from Huck Saunders and William Thoren with 2:39 left in the second period.
The Vikings then scored a pair of goals in a span of 46 seconds in the third period to tie it. After a tripping penalty put the Vikings on the power play, Renato Engler scored for Lawrence with assists from Blake Roubos and Saunders at the 7:19 mark.
Logan Lemirande then tied it at 8:05 with an even-strength goal with Engler and Hughes picking up assists.
Andrew Brownlee stopped 49 shots to pick up the win for Finlandia. Mattias Soderqvist made 24 saves for Lawrence, which had a 52-28 edge in shots.
The teams wrap up the series and the regular season on Saturday afternoon.
