Winter takes another title, LU women finish fourth

GRINNELL, Iowa — Taylor Winter captured her second title of the Midwest Conference Championships on Sunday to lead the Lawrence University women’s swim team to a fourth-place finish.

Winter won the 1,650-yard freestyle in dominating fashion with a winning effort of 17:40.75. Second-place finisher Jalyn Marks of Grinnell College was 25 seconds behind Winter, who also won the 500 freestyle on Friday.

The Lawrence women finished with 413 points, which was just short of third place. Grinnell won the title with 894 points.

It took a meet record to beat Lawrence’s Emily Flack in the 200 backstroke. Flack swam to second in a time of 2:08.15, but Lake Forest College’s Emily Bowens won the race in a record time of 2:06.57.  Lawrence also got a pair of fourth-place finishes as Hayley Cardinal took fourth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:28.58 and Paige Witter was fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:15.10.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Flack, Witter, Winter and Hannah Gabriel was fifth in 3:40.65.

On the men’s side, Charlie Mann was the day’s top finisher as he grabbed seventh in the 100 freestyle in 47.85. The Lawrence men were sixth with 216 points. Lake Forest won the title with 944 points.
