WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Freshman Jake Mills delivered a clutch two-run double in the 12th inning to lift the Lawrence University baseball team to an 8-6 nonconference victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday.
Davis Ogilvie tossed four innings of scoreless, one-hit relief to earn the victory for Lawrence (4-5). He struck out three and walked one.
Matthew Holliday went 3-for-6, scored two runs and drove in a run to pace the Vikings’ 10-hit attack. Mills finished 2-for-6 with two runs batted in, and Luke Zablocki and Joel Birch both drove in a pair of runs.
The game was tied at 6-6 headed to the top of the 12th when the Vikings got consecutive one-out singles from Holliday, Anthony Ortiz and Ogilvie to load the bases. After a strikeout, Mills delivered a double to score Holliday and Ortiz, and Ogilvie was thrown out at the plate to end the frame.
Ogilvie worked around a two-out error in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.
RPI (4-4) led 2-0 before the Vikings scored three times in the third on one hit. Lawrence benefited from a walk and two errors, and Birch then delivered a two-run double to give the Vikings a 3-2 edge.
Lawrence pushed the lead to 5-2 with two more runs in the fourth. Brandon Klar had a run-scoring single, and Zablocki drove in another run on a fielder’s choice.
The Vikings led 6-3 before the Engineers scored three times in the seventh to tie it.
