WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Colby College baseball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Friday by the scores of 6-4 and 9-8.
In the opener, Colby (9-1) broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the sixth. The Mules then added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
Brandon Klar led off the seventh for Lawrence with a double and then scored on Jake Gordon’s single to trim the lead to 6-4. Tommy Forese then retired the next three Vikings in order to nail down the save.
Gordon went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and a run driven in. Luke Zablocki and Davis Ogilvie both went 2-for-4 for the Vikings (4-7).
In the nine-inning nightcap, Colby rallied from an 8-4 deficit to pick up the win. Lawrence scored twice in the top of the first before Colby tied it, but the Vikings got three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to go up 6-2.
Colby battled back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Lawrence countered with two more in the top of the sixth. Colby got two in the bottom of the sixth to trim the lead to 8-6 and added three more in the seventh to take the lead for good.
Robert Donohue picked up the win in relief, and Forese pitched a perfect ninth to get his second save of the day.
Joel Birch went 3-for-4 with a run batted in, and Matthew Holliday and Kyle Duex had two hits apiece for the Vikings.
