BELOIT, Wis. — The Lawrence University baseball team powered to a win in game one of Saturday’s Midwest Conference doubleheader with Beloit College, but the Bucs rode strong pitching to pick up a split.
Lawrence won the opener 13-6, and Beloit took the nightcap 14-1.
In the opener, Matt Holliday went 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and drove in six runs for the Vikings (7-10, 1-3 MWC). Jake Gordon went 3-for-5, homered, drove in four runs and scored five times for Lawrence.
Atley Gay was strong on the mound for Lawrence as he allowed just one earned run over 7.1 innings to pick up the win. He struck out five and walked two.
Holliday got Lawrence on the board with a two-run single in the first and then added a run scoring double in the third for a 3-0 lead. Jake Mills picked up a two-run single as part of a three-run fourth, and the Vikings led 6-0.
Lawrence was up 7-1 when Gordon blasted a two-run homer in the seventh. The Vikings added four more runs in the eighth as Gordon had a two-run single and Holliday added a two-run double.
In the nightcap, Colton Lopez allowed only four hits in going the distance for Beloit (13-7, 3-1).
Ryan Kaveney and Austin Martinez both went 3-for-4 with Kaveney driving in four runs and Martinez three.
Zach Rabideau started for Lawrence but allowed six runs over two innings and took the loss.
